"Australia needs an explosive post-WWII style immigration surge that could bring in 2 million people over five years to rebuild the economy and address worsening labour shortages according to NSW government advice to new Premier Dominic Perrottet."

That should light up the switchboards today...

NSW Premier Dominic Perrottet urged to push for huge increase in immigration

best guess: it's an opening gambit proposing Ponzi style immigration of 400,000p.a., in the hope that they can settle back in at 250,000p.a. (?).

With the natural growth (births minus deaths) in the headcount you'd be looking at unprecedented population growth of well over ½ mill every year...not sure that would fly!

given the Coalition doesn't really go in for affordable housing solutions am not sure where they would all live.

Agree - apparently there are over 300k who are already qualified and couldn’t travel to Australia due to restrictions.

Where they are going to live is a big question mark considering how we are already struggling with stock on market. What cities do you guys think will be the major target of this migration boom?

WA needs them but there is no rental or sales stock for them to live in so will probably be an issue - though might drive up prices nicely :)

What labour shortage, I'm happy to work as are many others, but I/we refuse to become a casual employee expected to always be available but dropped at a moments notice working a min 3 hour day for minimum rate....... (some employers want 457 visa cheap cheap).

There is no shortage, merely a shortage of people willing to work for peanuts and a shortage of emoloyers prepared to invest in training. Immigration is a gravy train for some, but not for most. In tech, seeing decent wage increases for the first time in a while, this is a good news story.

Is it your personal view or you have analysed some data to come up with "there no shortage"? In regards to wages, I can talk about construction and I can tell you hourly rates are the highest you can find across the globe.

Maybe....but has someone actually considered the number of immigrants who will want to get out after the sever lock downs?

The other issue...is there is now a global shortage of talent..so OZ will need to compete.

The other issue is he massive issue of demographics....older population selling up and wanting to downsize and want more lifestyle. This will also change the demand in mix.

Personally....despite what the premier wants...the public will not want thousands of people competing on housing...unless the affordability and existing infrastructure issues are addressed.

Australia has some of the highest rates...in particular trades. But I reckon the tech increases are short term..as they seek more talent via hire offshore..but directly.

I was not alive back then...but this looks like the 1920s...post the Spanish Flu....just look at the asset inflation...all we need is people to spend money on partying...travel etc...I reckon this is next...

Housing shortage already exists in many cities - this will make it far worse.

I think the approving officer would look at the wallet before anything else. If money is not a problem, accommodation won't. Locals will face a bit more affordability issues particularly in Sydney and Melbourne. o_O

Thats the intent surely? Immigration has been running crazy for the past 20 years. Neither party seems concerned by the corresponding price rise.
