People didn’t have annual overseas holidays. Unless my family was abnormal (and possibly it was)…. My parents never took me overseas anywhere, we had caravan holidays up or down the coast.

I must have had a deprived childhood, what's a caravan holiday?

I don’t know if you are lucky or unlucky. Anyway, in our family, if you couldn’t do the holiday by caravan, we didn’t do the holiday….

    I prefer the European version

    upload_2021-8-8_10-41-59.png

During the great plague of London and San Cristobal, the doctors and all medical professionals wore special protective costumes while they treated patients.
The costume design consisted of a leather headdress and a long, pointed beak. The beak consisted of perfume. This perfume masked the bad odor that was present in the air around patients that needed treatment.

The Origin And History Of Medical Face Masks - Designer Masks

In the 19th century, women started to wear veils that would keep them safe from dust and pollution in the air. These veils were fashionable, covered with lace, and made out of special fabrics. However, later on, it was suggested that thicker materials should be used to create these face masks to give better protection against disease-causing germs and allergens

The Arabs had it sorted also ;)

I think people would have just got it and died. Restaurants etc probably would have been closed but otherwise it would have been business as as usual.

Running a family business meant you couldn't just up and leave except during school holidays & industry shutdowns over Christmas. So holidays were few and far between but were big ones.

Travel overseas was very expensive, not like today. Upper middle could afford, just from memory

Couldn't have been too expensive compared to the 1970's when air travel became common place with the introduction of the jumbo.

Flights weren't as cheap as the early noughties but definitely not prohibitive. I recall my brother and a group of mates flying OS for a week's holiday, even a couple of grand to NZ.

Just checking dates but there was deregulation of the airline industry domestically with Compass then Virgin driving prices down.

OS travel was a big deal back then, you couldn’t simply book your own flights on the internet, the typical person would use a travel agent to arrange travel. And yes, competition brought airfares down.

I went on a three month overseas circle Pacific trip in 1986. It wasn't that difficult nor hugely expensive. I backpacked Malaysia and Thailand, spent a week in Honkers, then USA and Mexico. There were heaps of Australians, not always so young either. I did Contiki in the US (where I met my wife) - half the bus was Australian. So travel wasn't that uncommon.

I would have been in primary school around then, I travelled overseas quite a lot but recall it was very out of the ordinary.
