I was quoted roughly $3,200-$3,300 (incl. GST) - is this fair or am I being ripped off?

If you do paint them, what about IKEA laminated (real) timber benchtops? Cheaper than stone. To avoid having to redo splash back one of our old kitchens was refreshed with left over click floor laminate as benchtops with timber trim to hold it in place. Tenant loves the rustic, original kitchen and it cost us very little.

In Brisbane I have been quoted $180 or $280 to cut and install a laminated benchtop. I thought that was okay price. So bunnings benchtop and a handyman to install it would be $500 ish.
Should cost about $700 to have it sprayed based on the sq m price however you could also get a handyman to paint it with the whitknight paint should only cost around $500 at max

Thanks for the suggestion @Coastal. I just spoke to my builder and suggested this. I'd be happy with $500.

The only photo I have is pixelated (?).

I've asked tenant to take a snap and send to me. I'll post it when it comes through.

Tenant sent the photo. This was a 1930s kitchen. We offered to replace it for the tenant in exchange for $10 per week extra. She loves this older kitchen (and probably didn't want to pay any more rent). We painted it inside and out, added a new stand alone stainless steel cooker, but the red laminex top was worn in places and just looked bad.

We had replaced the fake grass used as carpet in part of house (yes... you read that right :D) and with the leftover click flooring, we put it over the laminex (cannot recall if we glued it down, probably did) and hubby attached the timber front edge. It looks just as good in this photo as when it was installed six years ago.

You can't get Rust-oleum in WA? Doesn't Bunnings have it?

    Hi @Westminster, @wylie, and all,

Just an update, I have now been quoted $1100 (incl. GST) for laminex of the benchtop.
I am now trying to find the most cost effective solution for the painting of the cabinetry.

I suggested White Knight, and he mentioned this wouldn't be a good because it is a steel converter (or something along those lines)?
    Does this sound right?

    Any other paint suggestions?

    Thanks!

I used stain block (Zinzer brand I think) as first coat. But I did sugar soap first. The timber was filthy, dusty and greasy. Then I sanded every surface to get any dirt off. Once sugar soaped, it was easy to see what needed sanding. Light sand over every surface, took about an hour.

I painted inside and out so it didn't look like a quick tart up. Second coat was water based undercoat and top coat oil based gloss.

Our painter quoted ballpark $1k to spray this job but we ended up having him paint more than planned so I jumped back into the painting clothes and did this myself, roller and brush.

The bench top was faded and lightly scratched and we didn't want to replace it. New owners may rip this kitchen out so we wanted "bang for buck". I used Enjo furniture and leather polish and it came up a treat. Still not perfect, but didn't look dry.

I would also recommend the Oates "white" scourer. It is non-scratch and I was put onto this by the chap who does coatings on glass to remove any dirt and build-up as it won't scratch the glass. He said the Oates white scourer and Gumption is what he uses, plus some elbow grease.

    Hi @wylie,

Thank you very much for the detailed explanation. The kitchen looks great! Even the bench top came up quite nice with the polish and scourer. I'll see what my builder comes back to me on price.
