    Hello There,

I am from Sydney and looking to buy investment property interstate.

How / where to validate that I am not researching to buy a property in mining towns?

Look at a map. Try the website for local council and tourism sites. If all else fails, try the town's business development website.

Just go to google and search the name of the suburb/town.

Make a promise to yourself to get out and about.

I have no doubt you can google it, but i am a bit concerned that ppl live in Sydney and ask that sort of question. I kinda know where mining takes place. Also where sugar is grown, where backpackers are murdered and where wheat crops are. Even know where the longest unmanned train is.

Why don't you know these things?

There are maps that state mining departments create with the location of tenements etc. They should also show active mines, closed mines etc.

When you say ‘mining town’ what exactly do you mean by that?

Often people talk about ‘the mines’ when they are actually referring to petroleum extraction. From the point of view of impact on a real estate market it is similar, however, to look at current oil and gas operations you would need to look at the state department that issues petroleum licences.

Or just Google the town and read what the local council has on their webpage. Usually there’s a section about industries etc.

Beware if you look at mining/resource permit maps you’ll find a lot of Australia covered.
I guess what you are asking is how to find if a town is heavily reliant on the resources industry and will boom and bust on the back of that. These are generally the larger towns where they may do FIFO and DIDO. In WA you’d have Port Hedland, Karratha, Onslow, Kalgoorlie, Laverton, Collie and surrounding towns on the list - this isn’t exhaustive just a few that come to mind.

And if you do visit a Town which you might consider watch out for the younger blokes- no original skin left uncovered by tatts, large muscles except for beer bellies & usually on the run from the Alimony police. Also the older blokes will be wearing short shorts & those weird towelling hats. Then you will know that there is actual mining going on in that district
