I have a 1960’s 2bdr brick and tile single level semi-detached unit in Melbourne. It has an old gravity fed hot water system.

how much should it cost to replace this with a gas instantaneous system, including plumbing?

I have a quote, would like a few opinions before advising how much it is.

Not sure about units but I’ve replaced a heat pump water system and replaced with gas HWS for around $2.3k. That’s with existing gas lines.

Thank you - my quote was 3.5k. I thought it was a bit much but given there are new lines needed perhaps it’s not bad.

The copper piping needs to be wider than standard for an instant hws so that should explain a fair bit of the premium as well. Did the plumber provide a detailed explanation?

I agree with the above, there would be a new gas line 3/4" (larger than normal to provide adequate capacity), capping off the old system, new water pipe for feed/outlet, temp controller, possibly draining and removal of old tank.
