the builder said he's ordered 16m3 for 50mm coverage of backyard but i thought 16m3 would have been more. am i crazy or does that look about right?

    Cheers, Elives

Does he know the difference between 16t and 16 m³? There's about 1.6t/m³ of sand.

now i'm confused, the area that needs top soil is 31m by 10m. at 50mm deep that is 31x10x0.05 = so 15.5m3 of top soil is required is this correct or is my maths off ?

I'd estimate that to be somewhere between 12-16 m3. I am very bad at guestimating though.

At first glance I thought 10-11mt
Then I read more than the title.............
Hard to estimate with it being covered and all.......
A picture of the truck delivering would have been better (sorry)
(at least 2 deliveries, by a bogie axle truck)

It would have been easy if you saw the size of the truck that bought the materials into the site --But from those photo's there would be over 10m3 how much over would be hard to work out..imho..

Delivery docket would solve that problem.

    Looks about 8-10m3 to me..

Yep.. personally I'd go more than 5cm deep, but depends what you're going to do with it (just put turf on top?)

    Correct.

    And that pile is not 16 x 1.6t = 25.6t You've been ripped. IMO.
    16m3 is 16m x 1m x 1m pile on the ground.
Or obviously multiple versions depending upon width/length/hgt of said pile. Measure it up and work it out, as it's hard to get perspective on it in the photos.

That would make it a about 12m3 then, the bottom half in height would have much more than the top half as it base it spread much wider.

You have to apply a bulking factor as the material is not insitu.

Worth noting that the ground is sloping and the second photo is taken from the small end. I think it could all be there.

I was agreeing with your bulking factor of 1.6t to 1m³
So, if there is supposed to be 16m3 there that would equal 25.6tn of material. Thats a truck and dog or large semi trailer load. That pile on the ground don't look near that to me.

And, being a landscaper myself for 35 years, I've had a few loads delivered.

But a bit hard to work out without anything of scale being in the photo to work off.
