    I wouldn't say that! Not many people would have had the courage to keep a positive attitude and keep going when you kept getting pushed down.

    I think growing up poor can either set in your mind that that is your lot in life or push you enough to decide that is not how you want to live. It depends on your outlook on life, not just where you were born and into what circumstances.
    I grew up poor too and we lived week to week. I used to see mum sorting out the money at the end of every week. I decided I did not want to live like that.

    Thanks for sharing. Inspirational!
    We should have a meet up at the rink. You can teach us to skate. LOL

    And I know everyone wants to see Andrew in tights!!

    Mother used to sort her money into different jars for different things....She always had enough to pay the expected bill because of this. I did a similar thing with bank accounts and much bigger bills.

    I'd love a meet up at a skating rink....I just think most of the posters would be too chicken to come along.

    Maybe a PC retiree's meetup. We could even arrange it during the day, on a Monday skating at Castle Hill as there are some skaters that practice there at the sports courts. Hmm...that might not work. I've sold all our excess skates, so don't have any spare.

    Believe or The Man Who Thinks He Can
    If you think you are beaten, you are;
    If you think you dare not, you don't.
    If you'd like to win, but think you can't,
    It's almost a cinch you won't.

    If you think you'll lose, you're lost,
    For out in the world we find
    Success begins with a fellows will;
    It's all in the state of mind.

    If you think you're outclassed, you are;
    You've got to think high to rise.
    You've got to be sure of yourself before
    You can ever win a prize.

    Life's battles don't always go
    To the stronger or faster man;
    But soon or late the man who wins
    Is the one who thinks he can.

    it's only such a poverty experience like this makes people chose to go hard.
    I chose to go hard. Very inspirational story, thanks for sharing.

    I tend to agree with this sentiment. Parents weren't poor, but weren't rich either.
    But it leads to a question, if its poverty that drives you to go hard and succeed, how to make sure your children do the same... especially if you have succeeded and broken away from the poverty cycle? How do you make your children realise the same values?

    Very inspiration Deb. Thank you for sharing. Where there is a will, there is a way. You and Andrew didn't give up. It wasn't an option and you powered through. That's something you should always be proud of. I bet your kids will always love and respect you for those great times travelling around the country and overseas. Those memories will never leave them.

    Great read, very inspirational. You have been through a lot but always saw the light at the end of the tunnel. Setting goals and keeping your promise to fulfill them is the key to surviving adversity in your journey. I never had to go through this myself, but I have always done it on my own. Although now at 25 people think I must have had it handed to me. But no one sees the studying at night until 3am, or not being able to sleep at night because your head is running constantly trying to figure out how to best make the next move. Or the working 80 hours a week to come home and study, while everyone else is watching tv and relaxing. It's good to see that anyone on any wage that is strict enough can achieve financial freedom. As Eric Thomas always says " you have been through pain, don't cry to give up, cry to keep going and get a reward from it"

    Enjoyed the read Skater

    Whilst we can afford to buy it for our girls, they also work for their 'wants', number 1 daughter delivered pamphlets for months saving for an iPod. A goals marker on the fridge provided weekly incentive as the funds in there increased

    No 2 daughter is now doing the same for some roller skates

    As parents, we of course have to tag along and assist (drive them to location to deliver, monitor etc).

    As you say...

    Well done @skater - you must be very talented and very determined.

    The other day I watched the ESPN 30 to 30 show on Tonya Harding's life story - don't know if you are across it but I'm sure you would really enjoy it. It is not what you think if you only know about the knee-capping incident (and like most people, don't really know the full story on that).

    Skater, I'm sending your story to my brother. He is 30, single, on a 6 digit income and he still thinks he can't afford to buy a property. Always amazed whenever I read pieces of your story, even back from SS days. Congratulations on all you've achieved, you and your husband should be very proud.
