This thread was inspired by a comment @Blacky made in another thread, "But then I guess it all depends on how you measure 'success'.

So how do we all measure success? I know it will be different for each person and one person's version of success is not superior nor inferior to someone else's.

For my partner and I, ultimately it's really all about sticking together in life and having each others back. If we can grow old together living a life filled with happiness, joy, contentment, peace and feel as strongly about each other when we are on our death beds as we do now, then we would consider ourselves to be extremely successful in life.

What does success in life mean to you?

Gee you seem young yet you are very wise. Spot on! To me success is living a balanced life with my partner and family too, that's a priority and always had been from the start. What's the point of accumulating financial wealth if there's no one to share it with, right? I always stated that our home is us, the family the people, not the physical house!
Just saw a movie last night where a flight attendant thought flying first class was what she wanted, at a sacrifice of her relationship, but then realised that the relationship was more important, to have someone to come to rather than stay in exclusive hotels...or like in the movie, 'Devil wears Prada', where I would chose a simpler life being able to share it with someone, rather than the title or position or power, anytime! That is just me, but I know lots of people who are so ambitious that will place their priorities elsewhere.....?
It actually gives me great pleasure to help those less fortunate, to help family and friends, to surprise people in general, and sometimes even to surprise myself!
You see I consider myself wealthy, but wealthy in life in terms of having a loving, healthy family, that live everyday towards their desires or their dreams, basically when we meet our milestones. I often feel so blessed and am so grateful for my life and those close to me.... That kind of feeling will never be gained by financial wealth IMHO. However, financial wealth does help in life...you have better access to medicine, schooling, etc...
So as one of my favourite quotes stated, "Success is a journey not a destination!" or as Jim Rohn stated, "A few simple disciplines practiced everyday" (like brushing your teeth, like achieving what you consider important, and so on.).
    Keep living your dreams!

    Interesting thread @Leo2413 .

For my partner and I it's about achieving the best we can with the resources that we have. With that means pushing ourselves in all aspects.

For us we measure success in net worth. Each to their own.

Exactly, we feel the same. At the end of the day if you don't have anyone special to share what you have with then what's the point.

    Success = happy and joyful.

One of the quotes I like sounds like this
Happy life is made of strings of happy moments. Too many people looking so hard for happy life they missed the moments.

    Thanks @Leo2413

I guess a lot of 'success' measure is like the definition of retirement. Its very personal.

My measures have changed over time as I have matured and my circumstances have changed.
I would be lying (and I think most people on here would be too) if I said some level of 'financial security' is a part of the measure.
However, similarly I have absolutely no value of success on materialistic items. There are certainly material items which I purchase (or would like to purchase) as it would add value to my life (eg boats). Showing others I am wealthy has very little appeal, and in fact, I would rather people think I'm poor than rich.

Now days success to me is more about time to do what I want when I want - and having the resources available to do this (and of coarse the permission from Mrs Blacky :p)

You should be really successful by that measure.

You've missed lots of times ;-)

For us it's a combination of contentment and no financial stress.

To many people are chasing constant fun, or thrills, or excitement - which is not sustainable - and miss out on simple contentment with life (with some awesome times intersped).

The ability to afford what we want, when we want it is a very simple but powerful pleasure

'Cause if it's your own race car you wont sustain your first point. How do you make a small fortune in motor racing? Start with a large one.
