Domain created the following two episodes (of six) showing characters at a BBQ from various cities in Australia..

A little funny....and some reality check about expectations.

    House Prices

    Commuting

    What do you reckon?

I recently saw an advert for Ermington saying "...buy on Sydney Harbour...".

I thought you were well up the Parramatta River by the time you got to Birchgrove/Greenwich.

Anecdotally, and i am basing this only on responses i get on facebook posts when i mention the advantages of regional living, there seems to be a huge inelasticity of demand for people wishing to live anywhere but the most desirable areas. Postcode snobbery is quite high, and people seem to rather live somewhere and commute a longer distance to a job in a capital city rather than look to a regional city and live in a place where employment can be much closer. Maybe also strong ties of family and friends as well, but i liken my situation of living just five minutes away living in Norlane from my work as almost a pay rise of as much as 15% or more given transport costs and time are almost infinitesimal.

Not sure if people even consider the fact that if they work a standard award wage job in a capital city that an identical position (with an identical pay packet) in a regional city can effectively boost income and furnish significantly more leisure and family time by cutting transport costs and decreasing commute times by a large degree.

Remember, not every job in a capital city is a whiz-bang high falutin' occupation that pays megabucks more than a job in a regional area...supermarket workers, postal workers, indeed most retail type jobs pay a similar amount anywhere in the country. But few people seem willing to make such a change to make much easier their situation, and thus prefer to whinge and struggle paying higher rents or mortgages just for the esoteric value of being in a capital city.

That's just my opinion, but i do get that feel.

I could quite easily live anywhere with ADSL as a minimum. Most of my time is either on the phone or in the cloud. Seriously, who needs to go to the office to work? Sure, you can't stack shelves remotely but surely accounts, back of house functions etc aren't needed in CBD offices.

Indeed that's so true. Witness the number of overseas call centres and processing centres. If anything the cost of maintaining a CBD office is probably an unnecessary cost that just adds to the costs of doing business in Australia. Those jobs could easily be done in whoop-whoop as long as the net exists in a reliable and quick manner. But then, what will become of all the cafes, baristas and bars and the like in the CBD's? :p

Funny vids. Forgot Canberra though :)

In regards to regional living - as someone who tried it for several years, it's not something we'd consider again until kids are grown and gone. Canberra suits us - short commutes (even though I work north and live south), fantastic schools, unis, and hospitals. Plus career opportunities, shopping, community, and faciities. Also with regional we found everything except housing was more expensive (even basic groceries).

Definitely. We're moving back to Canberra in a month and I'm looking forward to it more than I thought I'd be. :)
