You can thank your designers!

They've put in a lot fat in the price for risk and not wanting the job!

But I'd do it for 10% off ;)

If youre getting wuotes that high might be worth speaking to another engineer to see if tbey feel its over engineered and can be done smarter

That is the one and only quote so far and it was just received today so no feedback on price vs design yet. @bob shovel suspects that the design is over engineered and has given to me but I'd like it confirmed by a local contractor and suggestions on how to improve. I'm happy to suck it up and get it re-designed and wait another 4 weeks for Water Corp to approve if we have to - of course I'd rather not.

You could ask about pipe bursting- where they ram through a larger pipe to upsize the pipe 150mm to 225mm. That will ensure it's sufficient for flow increases in the future. ..but requires each junction in neighbouring blocks to be dug up and re connected. And in the road
A way around it though could be to add another man hole in your block so you can upsize the section rather than digging up the neighbour's yards.

A tunnel seems extravagant plus will affect re sale price and possibly valuations. A tunnel sounds scarier than an extra man hole

The extra manhole would need a 1m clearance easement around it.

If you used the bigger, more regular mob around town for your design, you can bet your bum its designed for a 1:100 flood during a seismic event in the middle of a CatD cyclone under acid sulfate soil.

    Getting closer by the day.
Finally got 4 quotes for the sewer tunnel and have our preferred contractor. Prices ended up ranging from $75k to over $200k (!!!!!!!)
As the sewer only affects one of the 6, I had to seriously consider simply not building that unit if the costs were going to be that high.
In the end due to some negotiations with the project and subcontractors we have reduced costs (but same specification) to pay for the increased cost of the sewer tunnel.
I have a contingency budget but it's nice to not use it, if possible.
Building license is being lodged Monday or Tuesday and then all systems go for going to site in 2-3 weeks.

Great news! Is the quote you're ultimately proceeding with within the price you budgeted?

No, I only had $50k in my sewer works budget. I did however have an overall contingency budget that could be used if necessary. Thankfully a number of people sharpened their quotes for other items which has kept the overall project cost the same so I don't have to use the contingency money.

You need to set up a crowd funding thing for who gets to use the tunnel first:D

Wow big job, good to get a realistic price back and let you get it going! Any feed back on design or alternatives? Is there any further risk on the tunnel? ..... rock? Touch wood!

    Contingency contingency contingency :)

There was another option which was to decommission the sewer line and pay for 3 neighbours to reconnect to another line. It was touch and go if that was going to be a better outcome.

Could be more unknowns once your start dealing with other humans! They'll have a pet buried where you want to dig or a crop they don't want disturbed or just milk you for new turf and a garden and a balcony and an advacado tree:p

Last time I was in Perth I went out with a friend for a beer. They couldnt serve me anything 'normal' so I ended up with a bottle of 'beer' (not called that, but thats what it was) served in a paper bag. They didnt even bother with a label.
Im guessing its meant to be the latest trend.

Ive always been like a bit of a bum. Never did I think I would actually become a fashion icon. Yet here we are...
