Congrats on fessing up, realising the fault and taking action!!.

Just on the bike riding to work; what sort of intensity is it?

Not a smart-@rse question; it's just that I see folks out walking all the time - and they aint really pushin it at all...more like a stroll - which will not cut it sadly.

Are you getting to work (and back at home) completely out of breath and feeling like vomiting and about to collapse off the bike?

I have a bike which is an old clunker and weighs a ton compared to the ultra-light bikes of today. To ride this bike is harder work, so I don't need to ride a long distance to get a good heart-rate and thigh-burn happening.

@Bayview, I try and ride fairly hard and generally I'm faster than all non Lycra riders but slower than the majority of Lycra riders. In fact, for my ride, I'm 38th out of 77 on Strava, which puts me exactly at the middle of the pack.
I ride on a flat handle road bike with Tiagra gear and in shorts, shirts and sandals.

Here is a snapshot of my heart rate on my way home yesterday. My RHR is around 55 bpm.

Alright, my eating habits are a bit weird:
First, I'm a vegetarian and secondly, I fast on every work day, where I don't eat between 9pm and 4pm the next day. I don't do this for weight control reasons (clearly), but because it seems to increase life span in mice by up to 40%. Michael Moseley (BBC doctor) has a good program on it called "Eat, fast, live" or something like that.

But to answer your question, no, I'm not making any substantial change in what I eat, just cutting out snacks (except fruit and vegetables) and doing a bit of portion control.
The last two days I've had a whole cauliflower in stock as my "breakfast" after work. They are low in calories, currently cheap and I like them.
I'm also allowing myself two cheat days per week.

I ride a bit of a clunker too.
It needs a service, or at least some chain oil, but it makes it harder, so...
That and people hear me coming ;)

In. Bubs is now 6 months old and we're planning some cycle touring in Cuba next year. Time to shift the weight and get fit again. Current goal is drop 8kg, claim 2 local strava runs, and hit a sub 23 on Ashgrove parkrun (Bris).

No, I didn't. I've just seen the show and then went and read the paper that he was talking about with the mice and did some other reading online.
Did you get the book? If so, is it good?

I quite like him and his shows.

It's been around for a while but there is always new and exciting results coming from high intensity interval training research. The benefits range from weight loss, muscle growth, speed and endurance.. from as little as 60seconds of effort per session (20sec all out, 2min rest and repeat x 2). Enjoy his shows also, have the "The Fast Diet" audio book

The latest is the the blood sugar diet

This is a bold and radical plan that involves eating 800 calories a day for up to eight weeks. It works by tackling the fat that clogs your liver and pancreas and lies at the heart of many blood sugar problems.

Once levels of this 'visceral' fat start to drop (and this happens within days), the fat in and around these organs will begin to melt away like snow under a hot sun.

Not at the moment. We've got a pair of chariot running prams (single and double), so once it warms up I'll be challenging hubby - he can take the toddler, I'll take the baby. Just need to move kids swim lessons from 730am to get there again. Will get around to Kedron parkrun as it's not far from where we used to live there.

Have you done any of the Traq races?

    It is pretty interesting stuff.
    High intensity for short bursts.
I'm not much into sprinting these days, but a quick 2mins on the rowing machine at the start and end of a quick gym workout seems to work.

Running with a pram would be an even better workout! I cheat and run with two kelpies which drag me up a few hills :)

I love the Ashgrove run.. tucked away on that sports field. The Kedron brook can get a little busy..

I haven't tried any Traq races, whereabouts are they? I was keen to get to Mt Cootha tmrw for a trail run.. but will most likely be rained out. Have you been into the Banks St reserve for some trail running?

The rowing machine would be just as good.. Rather than sprinting outdoors I think its better to do it on a low impact machine to reduce injury. I'd think the stationary bike would be the easiest way to get the HR up nice and quick.
