The thing that gets people scared is numbers like 600K cases, 30K deaths. If it was 6 million cases, 30K deaths, people would be less worried.

This is nowhere near as scary as the AIDS epidemic of the 1980s.
You caught that, you were as good as dead. And for a long time no one knew just how it was transmitted.
Maybe they should bring back the “grim reaper” TV ads that scared the **** out of everyone.

Definitely not bragging rights ... I heard that the UK was going to use the antibody test, and then issue people with "passports" declaring that they are safe to restart their daily life. Would be a shame to have hundreds of thousands of people isolated at home if they can no longer be infected - seeings as everyone is so worried about the economy

I thought it was a good idea, especially for those who cannot work from home - hospital staff, public transport drivers, supermarket staff, aircrew etc etc

I've had a cold for the past 1.5wks. Started with a sore throat, slept for 13 hours a day for three days. Fatigued, sneezing and tickle in throat yesterday. No fever. Bad sinusitus as I forgot to take antihistamine yesterday which was really helping. It is a bit scary and also freaky when I've been taking extra precautions. My husband had a mild cold for a few days so I'm guessing I got it off him but rest of family are fine. I don't have any risk factors so I was sure it wasn't Covid 19 virus.

I had a bad flu in January with symptoms the same as CV-19. What was unusual for me is that it took me 3 weeks to recover. Most likely flu but you never know. I had been cleaning the Airbnb and had groups through from mainland China. It's a possible but unlikely source of infection.

More recently I had a flu like illness with the same symptoms but it only lasted 4 days, so I don't think it was CV-19.

    I want to start a t-shirt range:

    I survived Covid-19.

    Except mine would ironically say:

    I didn't survive Covid-19.

    Too soon?

As I said before, half a million people die from malaria every year and most people don't even know.

Before the death toll of this virus reached 10,000 globally, the entire world lost their minds. It's fear of the unknown driven by media and social media hysteria.

We are nowhere near the number of annual deaths from influenza and you don't see people panic buying toilet paper and food every flu season.

Some people really don't understand the difference between deaths and potential for deaths.

Given that the word "hysteria" implies unwarranted concern, I think it's important to note that without any of the action that has been taken to date, it's extremely likely that well over 100 million people would have died!

Agreed - the death rate is somewhere between 0.8% - 4% depending on where you live, whether precautions are being taken and your healthcare options ... so if 60% of the world population catches this virus - 7.8bil - @ 60% = 4.68bil

If it was left to run it's course 4% of 4.68bil = 187.2mil (or worse given 3rd world country status)

    If precautions are taken 0.8% of 4.68bil = 37.4mil

The USA alone are predicting up to 200,000 if control and healthcare are done perfectly - 1.7mil if they lose control.

So yes, a heck of a lot of people die from other diseases - but this is "on top of" those other diseases - and they are big numbers and worthy of concern.

And even then, I'd argue that these fatality rates aren't at the maximum yet, because we still don't have a single country where infection rates have reached even 1% yet. If we were to have say 20%, which without any action is entirely realistic, there'd be people dying in the streets! And I don't mean that as an hyperbole, but actually people dying in the streets (though mainly in their houses), as they've been refused medical treatment.

.... because lockdown has been effective in controlling spread

I agree that lockdown has been absolutely instrumental in kerbing the spread, but I have no doubt that the fatality rate will increase in Australia before this is over.
Hopefully I'm wrong and misinterpreting the data, but I don't think so.

Is that true? Where are these "people"?

Not at all . I completely agree with the warranted concern. What I am talking about is the language used by the media. It is absolutely hysterical and it is causing fear and panic in the general public. We should be concerned and careful. We do not need to be fearful or panic. It's ridiculous. This is a potentially serious virus. It's not the plague. People do not need to panic.

Some people just don't understand the difference between reasonable and unreasonable.

We shouldn't panic, but we should be fearful, fear is an evolutionary trait that keeps us safe.

    Why Iranian or American?

This is both promising and worrying. How many will deliberately get infected? How many will get false documentation? Tinfoil hat time for a minute, if enough influential people get it we will see a system whereby previously infected do not need to follow restrictions.
