Bing Lee had a 65" Hitachi tv for under $1000 a few weeks ago. A guy I work with picked one up around Xmas time and is happy with it. I don't know if they're still available or not.

    IMO
    -Good price.
    -Good quality.
    -Large 75inch plus screen.

    Pick any two. :p

I know what you are saying though. I bought my current TV about 3 years ago and went through the same thing. Back then plasma was superior for movies and I got one. I am hoping it lasts long enough for UHD to be reasonably priced. Then my nightmare will start as I go through what you are going through.

I buy from a local supplier but use these sites to benchmark prices: Appliances Online | Buy Online with Free Delivery
Electro Seconds | Buy Appliances Online

Check out graysonline for a bargain then work back to see if it has all the "time machine" features you need.
I have nfi what your talking about. Our one cost 200 from target... Built in DVD player! I'm still yet to watch anything other than play school on it

I bought a Panasonic Viera 50" - ex-floor stock; during the EOFS at our local whitegoods/electrical guy - in 2008.

    Still going well.

I might need a new one soon given the Samsung i have has started to do things on its own. It would reduce the volume without me touching the remote. Spooky

It had changed colours all of a sudden after couplr of years from buying(outside warranty). So everything i watch is very reddish these days. Changing colours from menu doesn't do anything.

My takeout from this experience is buy a cheap non-branded TV with good 3 years warranty. That'll do.

Problem with graysonline is it's all "refurbished".

But graysonline "refurbished" means "still broken"

I highly recommend avoiding graysonline "refurbished".

My Viera had some rainbow lines go down the screen a couple of times. So I wacked the tv a few times. And it's been fine ever since (6 months so far).

It's so annoying when brand name appliances screw up. You think you're paying for quality, but quality is very rare these days.

Hmmm... So they sell an item that doesn't work? The price is worth a punt that some one in a factory somewhere had a go a furbishing of some kind

Yep they sell items that don't work.

A lot of the time they'll say in the ad what the problem is.

Whatever they are selling they are selling because it's not worthwhile repairing.

For example you'll see a small line lost in the description somewhere that says "3 large lines through the middle of the screen". Or "Broken glass". Etc...

I got a smeg microwave from grays once. Refurbished.

It was pretty good, except the light-bulb didn't work, it was missing a leg, it was scratched badly, and it couldn't heat food at all. But besides that they'd done a really good job with the refurbishment.

    Got a refund btw.

Bought a new TV when I moved to Adelaide permanently. Got a Samsung 4k ultra HD 50" for $1056 on xmas sale, has smart TV so I can direct stream Stan and Netflix from the TV, no need for foxtel anymore!

I've never had an issue with their refurb gear. All worked fine for me
