Interesting, as OP said take up studies, have you thought about this?
Do you still continue to invest?

I find the fact that I keep investing helps me keep busy and I really enjoy this its more like a hobby, though it becomes more of a challenge sourcing finance.

Here are my thoughts...anyone who has retired and is happy and can sustain it before 50 ...is gold in my eyes.

Have met a few people who are over this age...but have listened to how quickly they retire. I heard one person who told me who with their partner comfortably lives on 35-40k...go luck to them if they can sustain it.

One of the things I realise about people who retired early is they have largely simplified their life ..less material stuff and more experience based. So one of the secret ingredients is it is less about money...but more about what is important to their happiness.

    you make good points.

I think if someone can live well on 35-40K then good on them, who am I to judge, whatever suits IMO.
Personally I need more, but all to their own I say:)

Horses for courses....I have to admire them...I certainly could not do it. But what I learnt is they still did not go without. They are just smarter in their spend.

For example..I pay $600pq on average for energy....they pay $90....a whopping saving ...so in the end they may not be giving up alot....;)

If they did that across all their expenses...they probably are sustaining a lifestyle similar to someone probably 80k year....something to ponder....;)..so they are indeed living well.

    Amazing.

There is a financial guy in Perth, Bruni?? he advocates living the good life on $200K in super and part pension, this is another avenue, of course retiring later in life.

Re studies, yes I completed a Master's degree last year both as a segway from full time to no time employment and as a contingency to get back in the work door in case I really couldn't keep myself entertained in retirement. The main thing I got out of the course was how to thoroughly research a topic or issue, and I now use this with my personal research efforts.

Re investing, I certainly am keeping an eye on my planned versus actual, and all is going well. I am a big fan of diversification of income streams and am hoping to add more property to the mix in future years when yield numbers are more attractive (I don't really care about capital gain at this stage of the investment game).

I haven't worked for over 2 years now. Hubby could retire now but we wouldn't be in a position to go on holidays or live it up. After him taking a paternity leave stint, his identity is directly related to his work. Not to mention having a reason to leave the house early in the morning and returning late at night to miss out on the majority of parenting duties. I don't see him retiring anytime soon. So while he's working I'll keep buying development sites to keep me busy

I have a robotic vaccuum cleaner that zooms around cleaning up husky hair for me. I feel pretty lucky too.

I do struggle with the concept and various definitions of retirement. Basically because I have previously only ever know people who were in the 60-65 age bracket who naturally don't do much after they 'retire'. They have their pension (state or super fund) and generally no other income (maybe some passive income)

So I don't really define myself with that sense of retirement. I don't consider my income source to be passive and I like to challenge myself within my work-life balance to make more money.

So for me financial freedom is different to retirement but that is only in my little head.

No, a non forum member. I also recall another forum member that I met once who had retired on rent - he was also living very cheaply and was waiting for the rent increases to kick in over the years so his standard of living could improve.

I also met a guy who had multiple properties which were still negative geared. His plan was to sell one every few years and live off the gains until the rents were enough.

I retired when I was 36 after realising it's possible to do on $35k a year. Being single with no kids helps a lot. I'm not a very smart guy so I had no retirement plans. I've got itchy feet and love traveling so I left Australia and spent the first few years getting messed up on beer and drugs and banging over a thousand different girls. Then I got bored with it so I started learning languages, improving my chess, working on my fitness/strength and doing volunteer work. These days I spend my time repairing electrical appliances and giving them to the elderly.
