Still working towards financial freedom so I can do what I want, whether that is continue working because I enjoy it or explore other opportunities and interests.

@Ace in the Hole, I would imagine preparing for a sale and total exit would be the way to go. Totally understand there is a lot involved, especially if it isn't a necessity.

I recall your developments are putting some cash in your pocket, yeah? They enough to keep you guys going through the process of preparing your exit?

For sure. If you really want to do it, then find a way to make it happen.

My definition of retirement is when I get to choose.
Choose to get out of bed in the morning. Choose to work (or not). Choose what work you take on.

Im half way there. I get that choice half the year. The other half I am a slave body.

Having become accustomed to spending 6months a year (albiet in 1month blocks) off work. I think it would take me about 2years before I would need the mental stimulus to return to the work force. And by then Im hoping I will have become accostomed to not working, so would find that tansition too traumatising to contemplate.

Being an unemployed bum is the best thing ever. But I've never worked so hard since becoming one!

A mentor told me years ago, if you dont work to replace yourself you are still selling your time and have to keep on working.. In that respect, no different to an employee or someone self employed.

Retirement = Position of F You as outlined in the movie "The Gambler".

Retirement to me is the day that me and my wife both have the option of walking out of work with no financial repercussions. Whether we choose to walk out of work is another question.

I don't think it was me. Indeed, is was someone else on the SS forum who posted a link to MMM that sent me over that way. After the resulting epiphany that I was already well past the point where passive income could cover living expenses, I tendered my resignation about 4 months later. My heartfelt thanks goes out whoever that was in SS land!

We would not have to work if we lost the biz and get nothing for it, could be comfortable.

I'd have to agree with that, although not too unhappy with it because I'm getting a very nice return for selling my time, and leveraging with employees in the meantime.
I will be replacing myself so that I don't have to keep working, very soon hopefully.

MTR, ignore the trolls. Just be thankful you are not married to any of them. I got married with assets. My husband had none at the time. We then purchased assets together. He retired in his 30s. By some people's reckoning, he had contributed nothing to the marriage and was living off my largesse, which is not how I see it at all. He stayed home and looked after the children for a while, during which time I went out to work. He contributed just as much (in fact, I would say even more) during that time because he was doing the most important job of all--raising our children.

That arrangement is perfectly fine and good on both of you for the successes.
Would you say he had retired though if you were still working?

If both of you had 0 assets and you worked and he had stopped, would that be retired then?

If one of you is able to stop work because of the income generated by investments which you both acquired since you partnered, yes it is 'retired'. Isn't that what this thread is about? If one of you has stopped work to raise children while your partner goes out to paid work you are not retired; but you are both contributing to the marriage. Whoever stays home to raise the children (whether man or woman) is in effect allowing the partner to make money. Without the stay-at-home partner, the work-for-money partner would have to pay for child care. So both are contributing.

MTR, you and your husband have been extremely successful in property investment/development. Kudos to you. Enjoy your time; I know I do. We recently went to Paris, Milan, Rome and Venice and bought lots of beautiful things. We stayed in a beautiful hotel designed by Jean Paul Gaultier overlooking the Seine and Notre Dame; a lovely large villa in Venice. This weekend was spent at a health retreat having facials, massages, spas, lovely food. Retirement is grand, isn't it?
