I'm with you. So we have to make sure the new tax only applies to new FHBs. I'm sure the pollies will Grandfather the existing arrangement ;).
Us people who are more established need to retain an advantage over the younguns however possible.

Haha give it time..upcoming ACA will be how first home buyers can only afford 600m2 blocks in blue chip suburbs where public transport is not within a 10m walk.

Calls will be made for the government to do something about it.

I actually think this might work. You can rent anywhere you can afford, but a suburb like Melton in Melbourne would be “First Home Buyer Eligible.” So if you want to buy a house, you can do so there, and maybe after 5-10 years of documented residence you’d be allowed to purchase property in a real suburb.

Do we have enough people on PC to start a new political party??

That’s the ALP modus operandi. Rich inner city elites with orders of magnitude more wealth than I have making nonsensical policy decisions to hurt the middle class, all while selling it as “eating the rich”.

Totally. I live in Inner West Sydney where there’s lots of left-leaning trustafarian types working in creative industries (when they feel like it) and buying up $4m houses with negligible debt / grandparents’ inheritance. They are happy to see the drawbridge close on others looking to better themselves in the name of climate justice and equality

    Okaaay..breaking it down:

    - voters in places like Balmain go almost entirely for Greens/ALP and are vocal on social justice / equality issues..aspirational property investors aren’t flavour of the month

    - many houses in these parts are now selling $2-4m+

    - parents at my kids school (who have bought such houses in recent years) seem to either not work or not in fields like law/banking/medicine but in areas that pay $50k in a good year

    - $50k pa does not service a $1.5m mortgage

Was coming at it from the angle that if you’re fortunate enough to inherit a large sum that gives you choices in life, then don’t deny others options - too many metro ALP supporters are like the people I describe ...themselves are v comfortable but don’t agree others should benefit from our current tax/investment regime in Australia.

The fractures in the ALP publicised in the media lately show that a proportion of working class/union member former supporters see the Libs as offering them a better runway to build their future. Equality of opportunity is a v different political objective to equality of outcome.

I see your point and this would apply to some people. However, lots of people don’t currently earn what it would take to pay a mortgage on the current value of their homes - this doesn’t mean they got an inheritance. Eg I worked some crazy paying jobs and invested and saved etc and purchased an expensive PPOR with a huge deposit. I don’t currently earn a crazy amount because I no longer need to and want to spend more time doing family things. No inheritance involved. You never really know what goes on behind the scenes.
