    Hey folks,

So I've got a property in Tarneit, its a 1 minute walk to the new shopping centre and a 5 minute walk to Tarneit train station. I would like to put in a granny flat and rent it out

The house is pretty ordinary but the backyard is a decent size (around 520m2). Here is the block from an ariel view.

    Its 512m2
    16m X 32m regular block

    Here are my questions
    1. Has anyone done this in the western suburbs or similar areas? What was the experience like with council?
    2. What would you go with, studio, 2 bedder, 3 bedder?
    3. Any recommendations/nifty ideas to get it done cheap but well
    4. Cost wise, what i'm i expecting?

    Extra info:
    1. House is currently rented by Indian family with no kids for $450 per week
    2. Access will be via side fence near garage

Any help will be appreciated folks

    Hi @Kidgeeq

You cannot independently rent out a granny flat in Vic. You can only accommodate a dependent granny or other dependent person.

You would have to go down the path of an application for planning permit from council for a proper unit.

    Exactly what JacM said.
Plus you'll probably find that the newer estates there will have a single dwelling covenant for 'x' time. Usually 10 years.
