    Hi all,

Hoping you guys can clear this up for me as I've never owned a house with granny flat before... We're in the process of buying a new house which has a granny flat already built and has separate electrical meter...

I want to fence it off and rent it out but my wife wants the privacy... So essentially if it has it's own meter and we have no one in it, how does the bills work out? So when I organise to switch to new house, do I tell them there is a granny flat that is vacant and will we have 2 bills? Sorry must be noob question but not sure how these things work

No you should be able to just connect the electricity for the main house and leave the other meter for the tenants of the granny flat to connect. Just let your electricity provider know that there are 2 meters and you only want the main house connected.

On each of the meters is a NMI serial number.
Have the person renting out the granny flat quote that number instead of the address

Agree with both replies. Each has its own nmi which you quote when you want to connect your electricity.

I'm trying to organise a 2nd meter now which is a bit annoying. You're lucky.

Does it also requires different address like:
1 John St. Lidcombe (Main House)
    1A John St. Lidcombe (GF)

Not really. But usually happens that way.
The first tenant will connect the power using the NMI, when asked for the address, the tenant usually quotes "1a". Then the subsequent tenants will connect using the 1a address as its on the system.

Our council required a separate letterbox for the granny flat when it was built, as we required separate water/sewerage. A tenant would want this anyway.
