    Hi
I recently started a new job that requires me to use a abn number but not sure what im allowed to claim back when doing my tax and how it affects my tax.
For example sake say i earn 48k a year ill pay about 8k in taxes and bits.

I know i can claim phone 1000 per year,
fuel maintenance rego and insurance 6500 ish,
    safety gear and uniform 500,
    Donations 200
    Stationary 100
    Equipment 2000

If i spend over the 8000 is taxes does that mean i wont have to pay taxes or what % does the expense reduce the 8k i ment to pay?

If my car dies and i need to spend 15k on another one how does that afftect my taxes?

    Any help appreciated

This means you are contracting with the 'employer' rather than being an employee which means you are operating a business.

But there are laws designed to prevent this changing of the natural order of things so you may still be an employee and taxed as one.

NO! You could pay much more.

Are you a contractor working for one employer only, or several?

There a few tests the ATO apply

If you earn 48k and your expenses are 8k your income is reduced to 40k and you will be taxed accordingly.

    Check those car expenses.
Unless the vehicle use is 100% business you will have to apportion private use.

Do you have an accountant? I'd be running this question past your accountant.

Only my opinion but the car costs ,and that's depends on the equipment factor and where your business takes you each day and you combine that with the $1000-00 phone costs ,would be better just to buy a new car lease suited to your business..imho..

Sounds like you might be an employee. Careful you don't lose out on super and leave entitlements.

That just means more money out each week.
Roughly $150 or so a week.
How is that benifital on a low income?

If you're not being paid leave etc, you could be a casual employee. Although now there are questions as to whether a casual employee working regular hours should really be a permanent employee.

If you're not getting paid leave, make sure that you are getting paid at a casual rate for your industry and position. A casual rate is typically 15-25% higher than a permanent rate.

    Talk to your union.

If you have an ABN it means that you are an independent business person and should be setting your rates.

It sounds to me like you would be classed as an employee most likely. A union representative should be able to advise.

The advertisement does not make you a sub contractor. Australian Industrial Relations law decides that. Talk to a union representative ASAP.

Yes. But your rate should be close to that of a casual. If you're getting paid the rate of a permanent and not getting leave, you're getting ripped off IMO.
