Ok, you win the proposal thing.

I set up a picnic on the beautiful beach at Palm Cove.

Just as I went to kneel to pop the question, a dog ran out of nowhere and did a poo about 20m in front of us.

Needless to say, I baulked, acted as if I was stretching my hip flexors instead, and asked a bit later, sans dog.

    Congrats mate!

Coming from an investment POV, you're going to love the costs of weddings! Average according to Google is 35k but anecdotally it's $50k+ for 1 night.

Don't listen to this Redom..you can get a 75 buck drive thru wedding in Vegas in a Cadillac ...Elvis outfits are optional.

Congrats - nice way to do it too.

Im in the same boat - planning a wedding in October. We are doing the overseas wedding thing. Mainly because for all my sins I am marrying a Russian woman. We have family spread far and wide, so we tried to find something in the middle which we wouldn't have too many visa issues. So we chose Lombok.

We cheated a bit, and will do the paperwork side of our wedding in Moscow. Its just easier for us. It will cost 350rubles (about $7) so dont bother with Vagas - its well over priced!
The party it self, plus a 10day holiday will end up costing a touch over $25k (including paying for flights). The wedding itself is probably about $10-15k of that.

    Best of luck

    Blacky

Yikes - i haven't thought too much about the cost of a wedding just yet. Not much fun thinking about.

Somewhere in between the $75 buck drive through and the $50k bonanza is a good starting point!

Weddings don't have to be expensive! We've been to the flash expensive ones, and we've been to some really, dare I say, cheap ones too. I couldn't say, as a guest, that one was better than the other. If the people you are inviting really care about the two of you, they won't care about how much you spend. At the end of the day, you are doing it for you & your future wife. Don't be tempted to spend thousands just to impress others, do what the both of you want.

No idea - we haven't started making those plans. We're both quite busy people and the thought of prepping a wedding isn't really at the forefront of our minds just yet (at least for me!).

5 years ago when my youngest sister got engaged they showed up to my parents place with a budget of about $40k. "Here ya go Mum & Dad!" My parents kind of freaked out over that one. :p

It's funny how they never get any cheaper...

Expensive or not, it doesn't matter. Your wedding is bound to be one of the most best and memorable days of your life. I'm sure you'll look back in the years to come and know that one of the best things you ever did was propose to the young lady. Congratulations. :)

I don't log on for a week and people are getting married, there is an influx of greeks and gay marriages are still being debated.

Congrats man marriage is a huge milestones - can't see the point of building a massive portfolio without having someone to share the spoils.

    Next stop....... little redoms!

    Congratulations! exciting times!

Don't think to much about wedding costs, you're a smart cookie and once you gear yourself with some spreadsheets and costs you'll make everything fall into place.
I think the reason weddings are "soooo expensive"is that people have never dealt with such sums of money let alone organising more than dinner for 2!
I found it to be as expected, no "wedding taxes" were encountered
