I thought about getting a life/business coach this year - turned out I was just bored because I was at home too much. It’s amazing how getting out of the house and around people can change your view of the world! And learning something new also helps.

So Im going to upset some people...........but for those people are the ones that are " found" and have a good grip on life, it will be a short upset :)

Here, I need to speak for those of us that dont have that yet, like me.

For those of us slightly to the "right" side of life, that have had some opportunity, worked hard, been lucky, and all that stuff let me stick up for the people on the LEFT side, that haven't got there............ yet.

Or those, that havent had the opportunity, BUT are of the "wrong" colour, sex, sexual orientation, spiritual belief, cultural immigrant background, money concepts, political beliefs, those of poor parenting, poor modelling, poor education, super poor ( or even manipulative) corporate training and career management.......

Mostly, they too have worked just as hard, maybe even had the same or better opportunity, maybe been just as lucky...........but havent yet been able to quite crack "the code".

I relish and work in this area of "life coaching" "street psych", life skills, mentoring, business coaching just a little bit, most think I'm a mortgage broker, but im actually a Rocket Scientist, but 2 letters short of that six pack:)

Nothing is more refreshing for me than to be able to simply provide tools to enable a huge human being to be all they can be - doesnt matter if thats a meat packer at a chicken processor, or a CFO at a large listed financial institution - we all have the same potential. There are those that dont believe that to be true..........

The difference between those on the Right side, on the sunny side, vs the shady side is usually ( but not always) a tiny wee little mustard seed of belief that someone else has in that person.

Every human is entitled to, and I believe has one or MANY more of these "angel believers", they just need to find them............ and believe.

That someone else is often a " life coach", a cheer leader, a mentor, a mentee, a parent, a child, a spiritual leader, and possibly ....... a dog.

That will confuse many, but a properly trained and socialised dog, has the one quality that we all seek, and many aspire to - that of unconditional love.

An excellent coach/mentor will love you enough to "stab you in the front" when you need it most, just like a great parent would.

By all means, discern carefully whom you associate with to HELP lead you, but be aware not all people are on the same path as you, and on some paths there is literally no space for others ( think on that for a moment)

To those that are where they sought to be - congrats. For those yet to be there, or yet to even know its an option..................... chase those people and tools........ its not that hard.

The DREAM is everything, it's resurrection Sunday, so get on with it folks

    Nice post Rolf .

I'm a bit of a Jim Rohn fan from way back . There is a heap of his material on you tube and a lot of it is timeless . He died back in 2009 but still has a strong following. Ive listened to much of his material many times . I really don't know of a business philosopher quite like him.

Jim Rohn is one of my faves.

His material is timeless in my view because it is based on biblical principles of old testament days, that makes it very old bu HUMAN recorded history

The "law of the farm" has close to ubiqtious use for peops like me, and I paraphrase, one of my many life regrets so far, is i kept putting off a Jim weekend event........

    • if u plant wheat, and the field doesnt give you corn.............dont be cranky with the field....... you got exactly what you came for
    • if you plant today, you dont expect to harvest tommorow........ basic life rule needing no further ......
    • a further is the law of sowing and reaping........ in the age of the internet - seek and find

Jim Rohn touched me the most.

Listened to a set of cassette tapes in my early working years when driving to worksites all over Sydney doing labouring jobs.
I listened to those tapes over and over and over until the principals he preached were permanently fixed in my mind.

I still recite his quotes in my head when facing a challenge such as:
    • Don’t wish things were easier, wish you were better.
    • Work harder on yourself than you do on your job.
And this is one that most people don’t get:
    • Formal education will make you a living; self-education will make you a fortune.

For those who dont want to pay for a Life Coach, you can also see a Psychologist that specialises in motivation .

You can use the cheaper option by getting 6 or 7 visits under Medicare if you get a referral from your GP

    Hmmm........

Just my view, I believe One cant motivate any other human being............ ongoing motivation can only come from within and being pulled by a strong dream or nightmare

As Keith Abraham says and I paraphrase - "you cant raise the dead"

While better than nothing, most of the work I have done with various Psychs and allied medicals is in no way equivalent to a long term association with a team of free range humans.

But for many, a psych or even well trained and experienced counsellor may be a great start

Wiser today than even then :)

With a couple of Uni aged children, I so believe in what Mike Says here........... the US is in theory ahead of OZ, but im not so sure.

I dont think the "education revolution" is as good as we expect it to be.

    What is a 'Life Coach'?

To me, it is someone that can guide you through ALL the challenges that you face in your life. For a life coach to be successful, they would need to not only have the experience and skills to do this, but also the empathy & social skills to match.
    This^^^

I know someone who went to a psychologist as they were depressed at the time. They were happily married for many years with a couple of kids, working in a stressful job. The psychologist told them they needed a new start to their life. They should leave their partner, kids & job and start over.

It's another of those jobs working in people's private lives that, in the wrong hands can do more harm than good.

I'm sure there are some good life coaches and psychologists out there, but you really need to be careful of who you listen to.

Google and YouTube have all the answers to life, instantly and free, it’s all been done before.
You just need to ask a better question to get a better answer.

I agree with both of you. Some of this coaching is useful, but there is a wealth of material freely available on the Internet which is very good. And as you say Rolf, the motivation and call to action must come from within.

Also, as the person in this video says ‘find what you love’ has its limits. A lot to be said for finding what you are really good at.

Hey Rolf, I holiday in GC every year with the family. Been coming up from Melbourne every year for the last 20 odd years (pre and post kids). Main beach and Surfers are my favourite spots. If you have the time, would love to buy you a coffee (that is a Melbourne thing) or equivalent when I am next up there. Love your insights and outlook. All the best for now.

What Jim Rohn and Les Brown stand for is the biggest piece of the puzzle missed for most people trying to achieve better in life but can't seem to. Very few people are willing to honestly admit that they need to change their own ways/thinking before things will change for them. Most don't even recognise the extent of their perpetual self sabotage.

Self mastery through continual self coaching should be the long term goal in my opinion.
As we all have varying personalities, who can possibly know one most intimately other than themselves?
All these mentors and motivators have not created some new found wisdom on human behavior and performance.
The lessons have all been passed down from those wise men and women who have come before them.
They are simply presenting it in a different way.

Like Rolf says, the motivation must come from within.

Coaches have their place, but a question asked could be - What skills does this coach possess which I don’t already have? And this may be the area of focus to improve upon in future.

I think if your a person who really wants to achieve life goals then a Life Coach is a good investment until you pi k yourself up so to speak.

But you need a good Life Coach better a Psychologist that specialises or has a interest in motivational psychology and resilience training

Because its like having a fitness personal trainer only every month you present to yiur life coach the goals you want to achieve etc

Nowadays of course you can get a life coach from Skype

I don't know about a life coach but it's good to know there are still a few fans of Jim Rohn around . He was a very accomplished public speaker and communicator.

I enjoy some of his talks .

Hey. Lyn is not a life coach. She is a person I speak to once a month about stuff I am trying to achieve and how I am going. It is mostly about business but if I have a personal issue I use her as a sounding board.

I do the same with clients in a way - if figured it was hypocrtytical to not do it myself.

And it is good. She listens mostly and only one of five sessions you get something that changes you - but that is worth it.

My wife also gets a mentor from her work (who is outside of her work) and she likes the process.

And Lyn is not “motivational” - that stuff is rubbish. She does not create ideas or set any of my goals or strategies.

Verbalising your thoughts coherently to another person and being called out on weak behaviour is important. The mere act of articulating thoughts to another person whose only job is to listen to them makes your internal positions clearer. And that person you choose (I choose) must be seperate from every aspect of your life and must be paid.

This stuff is not like a personal trainer in a gym yelling “come on”.

When my wife was given a mentor she thought her employer considered her weak. She now has a big 4 managing partner (who is not connected to her employer) and she loves it.

Lyn is part of my subscription to The Executive Connection and the professional development I get from that has made me a better advisor and a better person.

If you get a weak “coach” they will try and develop your strategies and motivate you. That is a short term game and will not work.
