The gas oven does not light. It is about 10 years old. Is it worth having someone try to fix it or is it better to replace it? The replacement + Installation cost is about $1100. Thanks

This is an often mis-diagnosed problem with gas ovens. If you don't have the manual then google the model and try to find it.

Sometimes it is simply a matter of having the setup all correct and then holding in the button on the interior or exterior to flow the gas until it lights.

Also, the obvious question, is the gas on at the mains?

If you have a gas oven, you probably have a gas cooktop and possibly a gas HWS, so some of these issues should be simple to resolve.

Gas appliances do have leak detection shut off sytems. There could be a leak that triggers shutoff. It stops explosions inside homes. Could even have just failed in that unit and triggered it to shut off. I had that happen with gas range.

Thanks. it is from the natural gas main. It is a combined oven+cooktop unit. The cooktop works fine.

Can you hear it go click click when turning the ignition knob? Might be easy to fix with new ignition or the whole thing might be broken. Hard to say as you haven't given much detail. We had to light ours with a hand held ignition/lighter when our broke a long time ago as the oven had life left but it wasn't worth fixing Firemate Refillable Fire Ignition Gas Lighter - Bunnings Australia

Is this oven in your PPOR and it's worked fine before or is this something a tenant is reporting to you?

    Good point from Westminister.

Can you light it with a BBQ lighter? If so, then it’s the it’s likely the piezo ignition at fault.

No need to put your head in - just your arm and the lighter. Worked fine on my oven.

Like this: Turn on gas, then straight away reach down and put the lighter flame to the gas outlet - at the rear of the oven.

Ugh did the fun police put a ban to this? I remember learning how to light the gas ovens at school this way.

So did I, with the good old 2" long Redhead matches not one of those fancy gas flame throwers.

We even used to flick lit matches towards the gas jet to get the burner to light.
