anyone able to recommend an inexpensive, qualified plumber/gasfitter to inspect an older gas heater in SE Melbourne?

Got quoted $185 plus parts if required. Hoping someone is able to do better.

$185 is pretty reasonable IMO, my plumbers charge $165 incl GST + parts as required. I’ve known some companies to charge closer to $300

    - OK - it’s at the tipping point where i actually feel like ripping it out and installing a split system instead

I just got mine serviced today for $66 but I'm in regional nsw. I think the smaller independent companies are cheaper. Another bigger company quoted $130.

Had a Hot Water changed over recently and had 2 quotes, one for $2,800 and one for $1,400..
    Get at least 4/5 quotes.

How much cheaper would make you satisfied?

    $50?
Is it really worth posting the question for $50?

Charged about $150 a couple of weeks ago by Melbourne company Griepink & Ward - but this included fixing a minor issue with a stuck button (the reason they were called out). They always do a CO check whenever they visit for any other problem. Their standard rate is $90 callout and $90 per hour and the callout may include a few minutes of work time - I can’t recall. May have cost a bit less without the button issue.

I would also call a few other gas plumbers close to you if Griepink and Ward aren’t near you - just in case a local is cheaper.

I haven’t used anyone else (as they were recommended by a friend and I’ve kept using them) so there may be even cheaper options out there.

Call Seaview Plumbing and Gas - John is his name and I used to work with him in Melbourne. He won't be the absolute cheapest but similar to the original quoted price and he can look at it and do a replacement for a split system if its more economical. Good guy, won't charge you more than its worth.

I have 6 IPs with them fitted, so yes, the extra amount does add up. But thanks for your unhelpful comment.

Let them know how many IP's you're looking to get a heater serviced at then, most trades will discount if you're getting a few done :).
