Can I do a farm business while keeping my existing professional job? - In this case, how can I find time sharing for farm business and professional job?

The secret is to pick a crop that can work around you - rather than vice versa. The reason we like garlic is we have a harvest window (usually a week) although, when the garlic says it's ready then it's all hands to action stations - and it's a product that doesn't have to be sold there and then (like tomatoes) ... any farming is labour, or cost, intensive - you just have to be organised and flexible

I hear there is great demand for Jerusalem artichokes and horseradish - something like that might suit

Have been sport harvesting the next variety - Italian Purple - in the lead up to harvest proper this weekend ... the size of the damn things are scaring me! Hard to believe we simply prep the soil with a green crop, lime and chook poo and a few trace elements to unlock the nutrients - then don't feed them again

If you're going to be in the Pokolbin area, give me a call and I'll prep some for you to call in and pick up :D ... had a laugh the other day when two Mormons came a-knocking and left with a box of garlic and no convert

I thought garlic was meant to repel those?

I think they will come back with more Mormons. Pretending to convince you to convert in attempt for free garlic.

ooooo - no - it wasn't free ... I had some drying out in the front veranda (most is down in the back shed) and - with such an amazing smell as sweet, fresh cured garlic, in bulk has - they asked if they could buy some. Fortunately I had a box made up on hand that I was about to go out and post off

:) My garlic arrived today. I had to move it out of my office and into the factory, because the office was starting to smell like an Italian deli :D.

Roasted Chicken with fresh garlic under the skin for dinner tonight...mmmmmm. Garlic

Practically all varieties will grow in Melbourne ... although, being coastal, it might get a little humid at times. Only the extreme zones - Northern Queensland as Tassie are restricted. Simply find a local grower and buy from them ... don't plant stuff from the supermarket please

Sorry been missing in action from the entire forum for so long - this farming stuff is hard and endless (but rewarding) work - not helped by being sent flying by a distracted, playing dog launching all 20kg at full tilt, and me ending up backside over in the middle of the paddock with a twisted ankle and very painful strained lower back. Damn that ground is hard and I don't bounce like I used to.

Anyhow - for those that want to know - the online shop now has the Italian Purple listed, along with mixed boxes and bags of lose cloves

Nope - they grow pretty enormous around here ... sadly we had to strip every bulb (all 250kg) back to cloves to prevent it rotting, WP_20151207_003.jpg due to excessive rain in the weeks leading up to harvest. Garlic does not like having wet feet
