Cover the pit with a blanket.

I kind of agree with this really. Fill it in with something that could be removed (gravel, sand) which avoids the whole "my kid fell into the pit and now I'm going to sue you" scenario.

Initially I thought about using something bulky like pallets, but I guess they can too easily be removed by a tenant.

And while nobody is likely to want to use it for working on a car, you just never know if it could be a bit of a selling point for someone who really does like to work on an old car, so I'd be loath to fill it up permanently.

Think of it from this angle, some blokes love their mancaves, old cars and tinkering with them.

Yes, agree, and the above advice on filling in the pit is good but missing the second crucial segment:

    1. fill in pit (as posters above).
    2. reconstruct/raise roof of garage
    3. install vehicle hoist.

    Done

The car lover inside of me is horrified at the thought of filling it in. I think you should just have a galvanized steel plate made up and bolted over it. Simples.

Our house came with a rather rudimentary DIY garage pit on one side of the old wooden double garage with workshop & toolshed.
Old house owner apparently a retired mechanic who was in the MG car club I was told by neighbours.
I filled it with sand, then a light cover of lilydale toppings to match the driveway.

As kids we helped Dad build his garage, pit was lined and had a ladder built in to get in and out, heavy duty mesh fit over the pit in sections stopped the land cruiser falling in if you drove onto it, plus stopped anyone falling in

On a trip to the tip the old man picked up some heavy duty pipe and later built himself an air compressor

I'm in the fill it in band camp only because they are no longer legal to construct due to the risk of fumes and passing out in the enclosed space.

Like a pool you can leave it and just fill it with sand rather than concrete.

If you want to open a can of worms ring your local council and ask for advice.

That is hard core - hopefully he kept it in the pit facing upwards ;)
