Have you considered concreting your yard to make it easier to blow the leaves back onto the neighbour's lawn?

A gabion wall can look great or cr@p depending upon how skilled you are in sizing, selecting, laying varying sized pieces of stone.

It does cost more when you have to pay for labour, skill, education, tools, insurance business expenses etc.

To do it properly you need to excavate down to level and create a compacted road base foundation to sit it on if you want it to look good and stay looking good. Then lay turf around it or whatever you want to do.

Landscaping done properly isn’t cheap and cheap DIY landscaping looks awful.

I agree with you but let me give you one recent example where I ask tradee to give me quote for rendering my house (existing). measurement to tender one facade that i want to do is around 20sqm or even less as we have double garage and big windows on the front.

material cost for 20sqm render from bunning without trade discount is around $300 including trims and rendering. the labour time will be one day (8hr).

so even if you consider labour for 1 day plus material plus tool plus travel cost will be around ($300+$400+$100+$100), now add 20% profit margin so around $1100 but the quote I got were around $3000... ! Some trade people think they are heart surgeon so they can rip off anyone with any dumb pricing... IMO.

agree, property landscaping looks good and probably long-lasting. DIY only work if you are landscaper and doing your own home :)

    Yup, IYO.

I’m a Landscaper who owns a company and runs employees. I can spot people like you a mile off and wouldn’t waste my time quoting. You think you know how trades should run their business and price jobs better than they do. I understand you can find random blokes on gumtree to do sub quality work for cheap and you are welcome to them. There is a huge market and demand for skilled trades who do good work and they make very good money. Hard for people to understand coming from country’s with extremely cheap labour.

I'm sorry but that's not how a business works. You haven't accounted for skill, the shape of the render (might only be 20sqm but it's physically fiddly stuff around windows and garage door), insurance, cost of running business etc etc.

Tradies generally need to charge more than $50/hr for labour to break even especially if it's a licensed trade - which painters who generally do render work might be if it's something like Acratex/Acrylic Render/

Lawnmowers charge $50 an hour, at least.

bricklayers and tilers are paid very well per brick or per meter laid by their employers. Contractors don’t quote an hourly rate.

Neither does the specialist surgeon we are sitting at now that my daughter was referred to. It’s going to cost 400 for a 20min visit.

Some people live in lala land.

if you look at my calculations then it includes 8hr of work which equates to $50/hr while actual work will be around 5hr roughly (i was told by tradie). I also considered 20% gross profit which includes insurances and everything else but even if you charge 30% or 40% gross profit still it will be around $1260... anything above that is simply robing in day light or making fool out of the customer who knows nothing about maths in my opinion.
