Heard on the news this morning, Europe worried about gas supplies from Russia and thinking where can they source supplies. Middle East came up as well as Australia.

I find it hard to understand how some European countries signed up for gas supplies from Russia. Blind Freddie could see how Putin would use it as a weapon ...

Putin's probably been using it for leverage with Western Europe for a while now, much to the chargrin of the US. The EU gets 40% of its' gas supplies from Russia.

It is still cheaper to buy from the Rus than over in Australia.

I have no idea where you are getting your ideas from.

That too is complicated - as fossils are one of the main income sources for Russia, but the world is moving away from fossils - ergo a dilemma ... throw in a major pipeline direct from Russia to Germany - Germany not wanting the gas cut off if it goes to war - Russia not wanting to cut off the gas as then it wouldn't get any income to it's empty coffers ...

Man - can't we just all get along!

The EU have been given the opportunity to go on contract pricing. But in their great wisdom, they decided that 10 years ago why bother as it was cheaper to go PAYG market rate.

Fast forward to COVID 2022 - this have totally came back and spit in their face big time.

What a dumb cluster bunch of chicken. Pluck Pluck Pluck

I think Russia has been beaten into a corner with the NATO expansion. And you dont mess with a cornered animal, they get vicious. Once I cornered my cat after it threw up on a brand new carpet. Still have the scars.

Lol, European folly yes, but how does that contradict anything I said?

Europe must defend itself against Vladimir Putin’s energy weapon

There are vested German interests that are happy with the commercial benefits of such a project above any strategic/security implications. Russia's gas reserves and geography obviously make it the most commercially viable supplier, why is it so suprising that they would take naturally take advantage of that position and in ways that may contravene EU regulations given their form?

I find it a bit of an odd dilemma now - back in 2016 a colleague raised the spectre of this happening, why would western Europe put it's reliance on gas supply in the hands of a Russian controlled pipeline?

Funny how what he foresaw is coming true.

The need the gas, specially when it's snowing and below Zero and Russia wants the money.

Almost every country has done this at one time or another with exports.
The US been doing it for decades, why would'nt they do the same.
And Australia will be doing it soon if the greens have any balance of power.

Have just watched the new Russian Ambassador to Australia at a news conference. The poor man has to be one of the most inept ambassadors ever sent to us - he could not come up with a good reason Russia has troops surrounding the Ukraine and seemed completely out of his depth,
