I met many great people at the Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo who are professional musicians in army and police bands. They all had similar stories, struggled to make end meet as musicians until they got their current jobs. My step daughter studied composition and conducting at VCA, and it couldn't pay the bills so she had to persue a different career. I wish I had more money back then to support her, maybe she'd still be doing it.

If your passion and job are the same, then that's great and those people are truly blessed. But a job is a tool to earn money to allow you to live and follow your other dreams. I'm lucky that I work in a field I really like, as a software engineeer. But if I had the same income and didn't need to work, I would be able to pursue the hobbies I really like, which would include contributing to open source software projects.

Yes, this is true. Passion is not always equal to realism.

And then people try to adapt to making something they can make a living out of their passion...
I'm really passionate about documenting corporate risk at the moment.
Brain washing for fun and profit.

Yeah, I'm not good at it. I curse everyone that I go fishing with as well.
Imagine how much you would be getting paid per hour.

I believe I get ikigai through all three of my work, my airbnbing and my volleyball venue managing! Triple win! :p:D:p

There's been a few times when I've decided to not pursue opportunities in companies where my personal beliefs dont align to the product. And I am sure there are roles I could get paid more for, but they would also need to satisfy the "what you love" sector, and for me, they haven't got the tick in that box. And there's the work hours box to tick too. Flexibility goes a long way.

I also heard that around 60% of people don't like their work. How sad is that...

Is this Japanese concept the secret to a long, happy, meaningful life?
