Take emirates - it far outweighs the rest chauffeur service express lanes private rooms and u can shower 1+'hours before landing on the plane.

I have taken a few first class from Malaysia Airlines really feels business in Singapore airlines, British airways the worst poor service, Cathay premium service but lacking faculties, qantas another business like first class - Garuda another business like first class but they have this service of immigration on board the stamp ur passport so u can avoid customs when landing only airline I think that does that

    thanks for the pointers!
even if im using points, I refuse to take a service if first class is only marginally better than business

eg I flew Malasya air business class and it was a dated plane, it was good but certainly not paying 3x the price of economy to be honest,

emirates definitely on my number one preference list,
ill never be able to do the residence, but first class is definitely possible at 400k points return long haul to europe or america

im always looking for ways to get points via credit card :)
im quite proud of myself for 2017!
    makes a crappy year bearable

All of you are making me jealous.

And re: the points kicker when you sign up for a credit card - what stumps me is how easy is it is to get a CC with a limit of $15K and up from any of the big 4....but when you ask for a securitised loan increase, the answer is "no". Astounding.

For PE over P, maybe 10% extra. For B over E, 20% extra tops. eg. for a $1000 return economy trip to the USA, I'd pay $200 max extra for business, not the $6000 extra they try to charge!

When my wife used to work in the USA for a commuter airline tied to United, we could get mostly free international trips on standby. The only cost was the taxes and the difference between economy and business was around $50 on a LA to Sydney flight - definitely worth it! First was only $30 more than business, but you had to have the seniority of the Pope to score a seat.

For me its about flight length too.
I would nevee travel premium class for interstate or even 6 hrs flight to asia.

Becasude by the time you get in. Settle down. Seat belt signs go off. Its almost about time to land.

Definitelt would only think about it if im doing long haul

Malaysia is not that great to be honest - though they upgraded the seats recently
Take emirates - you will find it an experience like no other. take a shower in the plane refreshed, pickup limo service to your location and just end to end service.
I took british airways first before - and they din even have the menu stocked up - sorry no pies - only beef sandwiches, bathroom was leaking - it was like a poor man's business class

What can one do to gain lounge access without paying, flying F or J, or being a frequent traveller?? Any strategies?

Have a Westpac World Credit Card ...the credit card is free (if you spend the required $$$) and the Priority Pass lounge card (they give you ) has unlimited free usage on any airline at most airports ....it is so good I have 2 (joint cards) cards ....
You may need to Research the credit cards in Oz (if you are Australia based) as this card is a NZ (I am Hk ,NZ and Australia based)
Also watch out for specials ...Qantas had 4yrs Qantas Club membership for $1,020 recently

Qantas sell annual memberships to their clubs for people that don't have enough status or aren't flying biz class. It's about $600 a year but sometimes they have sales - this year they had 40% off QClub membership for a few weeks.
You can then fly Jetstar or Qantas economy and enjoy the lounge beforehand.

I'm not sure if other airlines sell such memberships.
