I bought a $100 domestic fare and was offered to use points to upgrade. I made it the start of my child free weekend rather than the holiday starting when I got off the plane. A nice big seat, a juice on boarding, a freshly cooked breakfast and a big set of headphones to watch an episode of Grand Designs.

I have flown both First and Business Class a lot for work on lots of different airlines. When I fly on my own coin I will pay for economy and depending on the sector length (7+ hours) and aircraft (eg if it's a 737 then forget it I'll just stay economy) then I'll upgrade to business.

In my view whilst First Class is nice it is not nice enough to justify the extra price hike between Business and First. The First Class Suites on some airlines are amazing and other First Class (eg Qantas) is rubbish. The best part of the Qantas First Class experience is the yummy olives you get as a starter. The rest is just meh.

If I was going to say Europe on my own coin I would fly to Asia in Economy or Premium Economy then I'd fly Business to Europe. I don't want to be exhausted when I get there so the rest is worth it. Plus you then get access to the business lounge in Asia so you can freshen up and become human again before your flight. On the way back I'd even consider going Premium Economy all the way or even just to Asia then Economy back home if I was really tight on budget.

Also, the lounge access is a bonus too if you don't fly enough to warrant club membership, or fly lots of different airlines.

I go business on anything longer than a couple of hours. Economy on short domestic flights unless there's not a huge difference in price.

You will get to the bottom of the ocean first if the plane crashes

    IMHO for long-hauls:
    1. If you are time-poor, you will travel at least business class.
    2. If you are cash poor, you will travel economy.

Before you jump on me, I know the flight takes the same time. I am referring to the recovery time at your destination.

Is it around $100 extra per hour, per person, per direction, to upgrade from economy?

If one were to invest the difference over economy toward an incredible hotel upgrade, one could have at least an extra day at the destination to recover.

Turbulence, flight times, delays, annoying people and screaming infants/children don't care what class you fly in.

edit while business class may be worthwhile if you're a jetsetter and need to get sleep or work done during the flight and have tight schedules, but for taking a holiday without blowing cash, I like travelling with the plebs. There's nothing an airliner could do for the sum of money they want to make the flight a memorable part of my holiday.

    @MTR go biz class.
It's usually around 3 times more than economy but on a long flight it can make the difference between arriving somewhat coherant and arriving and spending 3 days longer to adjust.
Which side of US are you going? I've done PER-HK-JFK (New York) with Cathay Pacific in 24hrs at biz class and it was fantastic. Being able to lie flat to sleep means real sleep and it's fantastic. The meals are a bonus, the lounge access at the airport delightful.
If you are going to the other side check out the Qantas flights from Sydney. Do economy to Sydney if you want then a direct flight to about 3 places on the west coast.

IIRC it was just a whole bunch of credit card sign-up bonus (bonii?) netted him a whole heap of points then used it to travel.

Just remember - drink or tablets when flying, not both.
I've seen it end in tears.

I see my GP before flying only for long flights, 1 tablet only no issues.
I am sure some can abuse this, but not something I would recommend.

I always ask my self, ok the extra $1/2/3/4/5/6k I pay for the flight, what can I do with it

for $2k I can go to bali for a week or for 5 k I could almost go europe for a week flying economy

    so bus class x1 vs (economy classx1 + 1 trip to bali/europe)

    definite no brainer for me!!!

and thats probably why I cant afford it in the first place!

Always flew business class internationally when I was in corporate world.

Went to Thailand last year and flew economy on Singapore on the A380, I just paid $50 each way to get a exit door row with tonnes of leg room, and Singapores meals are generally pretty good. Was a good flight.
