    Hi all,

Looking at putting floorboards down in the bedroom.. I heard Carpet is better, but is this personal preference or is it better for warmth to have carpet? I would think it would add abit of value to the place with the same finishing throughout.

    Thoughts?

    Matt

Its nice to step on to carpet when getting up in winter, compared to floor boards, but a rug under the bed could also serve a similar purpose.

Unless allergies involved that rule out carpets, it is a personal choice.

Floorboards are colder, harder and noisier, carpets softer and warmer.

Floorboards here, reduce allergies, and much easier to clean

My last 2 places had floorboards in common areas and carpets in bedrooms - wouldn't have it any other way - perfect compromise of function/comfort. My wife is quite sensitive to airborne irritants (esp if cats have been around) and has never had a problem with carpet in the bedroom.

IP - Floor board (easier to clean / maintain)
    PPR - Personal Preference

For me, in my PPR, I have (and prefer) floorboards. Mainly because kids are still at the age they throw up when they get sick... much easier to clean than carpet. Also better for allergies.

I'm a firm believer in polished concrete/epoxy flooring with drab grey on the walls & ceiling.

Tenants can add a splash of colour.

Nothing is more homely than Gulag-style finishes.

I like floorboards personally, but unfortunately I’ve got carpets at the moment

Floorboards are easy to clean - no vacuuming or quarterly deep cleaning.

A spray mop will clean the whole house with floorboards & tiles.

But if it’s your bedroom then choose whatever you like :)

In my PPOR we have carpet but I have floating floors and polished floor boards throughout my IPs. Less maintenance and easy to clean.
I would do it in my PPOR also if I started again.

In my daughters room, I have some cardboard boxes that are being used to store stuff. My daughter had split milk on the floor and it dried up... for months I was walking into her room and smelling the stench.

Decided to investigate and found the milk had dried up and glued to the cardboard box to the ground. Applied some hot water and scrubbed it away 10 mins later. You can't do that with carpet :)

In the process of installing Queensland spotted gum solid flooring. No carpet anywhere.

Hard floors plus rugs for me. Not a fan of the dust.

Its all about personal preference. We did boards downstairs, carpet upstairs. Carpet is definitely warmer underfoot in winter and better for acoustics ....but floorboards are sexier... easier to clean spills, pet accidents etc....aesthetically they are the winners.

There are also heating considerations . You can do underfloor heating with floors, but there are warranty issues. You can lay it under click lock floors without voiding the warranty, but if you lay it under tongue n groove you void the 25 year floor warranty .. and unfortunately most the nicer boards tend to be tongue and groove.

The other option is to tile... with underfloor heating if you are inclined .... easy to clean. They look good.... and they will also help the house stay cooler in summer . Plenty of timber look tiles these days that can be laid with 1mm gaps so they look just like floorboards

I cannot wait to rip up the carpet upstairs and put down floorboards. It's right up the top of the list of reno's we want once the mortgage is paid off.

A good rule of thumb is hard floors to the living areas and soft to the bedrooms, but it's really dependent on the home and situation.
