We’ve bought a property where there’s a paved undercover entertainment area and an elevated back yard (and pool) above it. There’s probably a 1m drop between the yard and the paved area. At the moment there’s just a few stairs up to the pool and yard.

My toddler is almost 2 and he’s very quick. He loves running around in the yard where we’re renting, so don’t want to deprive him of this in our new place. I want to put a fence along the edge of the yard so he doesn’t run straight off the edge of it into the paved area.

Suggestions for fence type and what sort of cost I’d be looking at? It would be about 7m plus a gate. Fence obviously can’t be the type he can climb, and he loves climbing. Would a picket fence look weird?

Pool type fence - either glass or metal?

Hm, good thinking. Maybe I could even get something to match the pool, though I’m thinking it wouldn’t need to be quite so high.

Or you could plant a tight hedge along the edge - to be a soft barrier.

Would love to do that with rosemary but it’ll take too long and there’s the safety risk while it’s growing.
