    Hey PC team
We are planning 13 days in Italy in March and keen to get off the beaten track rather than just see major cities. Do any of you have any suggestions of favourite places etc?

We were there in May this year- go to the Cinque Terre. It's simply incredible. You can hike from town to town - amazing!

We also stayed at a fantastic air BnB in Tuscany and hiked in the forest there - also incredible and literally walking where even most Italians wouldn't go.

Happy to give you the name if you like - it's an old Tuscan farmhouse and the owners Eugene and his Dad Pietro are just gorgeous. We loved them.

One of my favourite topics... go North and then hit Lugano and St Moritz.

Lago Maggiore and Lago di Como, eye candy

Palmanova, Udine - looks pretty cool from Google maps.

Massive greenbelt around an old town. Much nicer than Canberra.

Did you visit one of the spaghetti farms near Macaroni? There's a red light district near Ragú - quite saucy too.

Stressa on Lake Maggiorie...Regina Palace Hotel amazing.

Capri...really pretty/glamorous island not far from Amalfi Coast.

Amalfi Coast including...Positano, Ravello or Amalfi itself.

Top picks from my visit last year Cinqueterre, Sorrento, Positano, Ravello, Capri - Blue Grotto many places in Sicily- Erice, Agrigento. Towards Florence San Gimignano is must. Sienna is worth seeing as well. Stayed in Airbnb throughout the trip. Happy to share the details if you like.

    Definitely Cinque Terre

Fabulous string of towns that line the coast. A ferry ride between the towns or catch the train.

Would be worthwhile spending a few days there.

No. But I did go to the ancient city of Salami. The tour guide advised me not to wonder the streets alone at night. He reckoned that Vespa riding locals use their salamis as weapons lol.

I have lived in Italy cumatively close to 6 months over many trips. You can't go far wrong anywhere in Italy. My favs are:

Praiano and the Amalfi in general
    Capri
    Rome and The Castelli Romani
    Venice and Burano
    Bolzano
    Sienna and Florence
    Orvieto

Next trip I'm going to puglia and Sicily so can't yet comment on these places other than i plan to go to alberobello, Gallipoli, and Taormina

thanks jess, i'd love to have a look at the tuscan farmhouse. sounds exactly what we hope to do. meet locals, stay in some places out of the major cities. don't think we'll be able to squeeze in cinque terre this trip, we really wanted to do the amalfi coast instead.

Farmhouse at 10km from Florence (2) - Bed & Breakfasts for Rent in Bagno a Ripoli (Firenze), Toscana, Italy
This is the link - Pietro cooks and we used to sit with a wine and chat with him, it was just lovely. Gorgeous people.
