    Hi All,

We have been in Brisbane for about a month now. We have been quite busy the past month just settling in, but would like to get out a see a bit more of Queensland and northern NSW.

I would really appreciate some suggestions of places to see, things to do, good camping spots, good day trips etc.

Ideally we would like to keep it to within 2 hours of Brisbane (unless we camping for the weekend) as well as be relatively child friendly (as I have kids between 2 and 7).

    Thanks in advance!

    Cheers,
    Robbie

Gold Coast/Northern NSW you have Lamington, Springbrook and Tamborine National Parks, all stunning...

Would recommend climbing Mt Warning (first place on Australian mainland to be touched by the sunrise). Views from Byron Bay to Surfers Paradise and the surrounding hinterland.

Also the Stradbroke & Moreton islands for boating, fishing, surfing and camping

Hot Air Ballooning in Beaudesert is a great way to see the hinterland

We've been doing day trips/drives around the place once a fortnight in our little convertible. There are lots of really nice places. The above lists are a good place to start. Lamington National Park is my favourite so far. Hire a convertible and drive up there. Its pretty awesome, especially the one lane rd that goes through all the trees, amazing just cruising with the top down surrounded by nature.

Have you been to Moreton Island yet? There is a ferry that runs from Redcliffe on Sundays (and Fridays) which might make a good day trip.

Cross the Noosa River to Noosa Northshore and drive on the beach up to camping sites right on the dunes. You can go up to double island point and Rainbow Beach. Easy 4wd as long as you let your tyres down to 15 or so. Lots of places for kids to explore and it is very cheap camping and 4wd permits, barge is <$10

Speaking of islands, there's tangled doona as well (Tangalooma) - it's on Moreton island.

I was going to say what @RPI said. It is a good day trip but leave early in the morning and keep an eye on the tides if you plan to 4wd along the beach and make sure you have your permit.

North and South Straddie are very nice as well but will need to catch a ferry or barge over.

Northern NSW you have to go to Byron Bay. Not as good as it was back in the 80's when I was growing up very commercialised these days but it is still beautiful. Also Brunswick heads is a good little stopping point - the fish shop near the trawlers is amazing alot of great memories of christmas' seafood from this area.

Coolangatta is good little spot at any time of the year but if you love cars or the rockabilyl 50s scene. You need to go when Cooly rocks is on. The atmosphere is amazing.

Talking about cars. If you do like the cars and that kind of scene then Willowbank Raceway is great there is normally something always on between the race course and the quarter mile and they also have go karts out there.

Toowoomba is great place to visit too. They have local produce markets on a Sunday morning which are good. But my favourite is heading to Ballandean or Stanthorpe for the wineries. Ballendean wines is my fave place to stop - always stock up when I am there.

Also if you like a lovely country pub meal on a Sunday - Try the Harrisville pub its about 10 - 15 minute drive from Yamanto (Ipswich) - Family owned pub - Its beautiful

Hopefully this will give you some ideas out side of the square.
