One of the matters firms find hard to find is not just qualified people - Advice is a verbal and written communications game within and external of the firm. Those who are technically astute and conversant may rapidly rise through the industry v's others with poor communication skills. Ability to market and sell yourself and the firms skills are also a trait many lack. You can know the technicals but knowing how to sell is also important since one KPI is revenue.

I would suggest the type of firm is important. Find one that has the capacity for broad experience. To become a tax agent you need experience across the board incl super. Many firms can pigeon hole staff into a team eg GST and it can be limited if you need broader exposure. A smaller practice may be better than a larger one but it varies.

You will also likely need pure accounting skills too. ie small + medium business etc. Dont woory too much about some areas of tax eg international and R&D as these can be outsourced to specialists and you will learn more from them. One of the first skills to develop is a skill to advise what you dont know so you can seek others who can assist. You will meet others in the firm and external who will give that support. Mid tiers also offer good professional year and inhouse training and education support

@Paul@PFI thanks for that. I've been attending my local toastmasters meetings to improve on communication. Not sure how else to improve on those soft skills.
