Worrying about it is even more scary.

Set holdings up to your preference, keep putting in as much as you can or want to then go and do something else.

The only thing I know about BTC is once reading it requires an large amount of energy and a vast amount of computing power. On reading that my mind went to the equivalent of gold rush and selling picks and shovels to the miners. And that is all I know about BTC.

As for the other two, the first is it's about 1000 ARG per year according to @pippen and, on the second issue, it has been quite a while since I attended the Adaminaby races. The donkey I backed is probably still trying to cross the finish line.

The bottom 495 companies dragged down returns in the S&P 500 . The top 1% of companies made up 21% of market cap and 16% of returns. The S&P 500 is only for lazy and incompetent fund managers to have an easy and safe bench mark to be compared to. Better to invest in the best companies than 400th best.

Happy to be a lazy fund manager myself and get sp500 returns for the incredible cost of 3bps

What an utter nonsense statement. So did the bottom 499, and the bottom 1, and every other number in between.

This is utter nonsense. Even despite supply chain problems Apple reported 100 billion dollars trailing 12 months profit. How many companies can you name that had that much revenue ? I bet you cant name 499, I bet you cant name 4. Even Better name just one that can beat Apples December Q . Put your money where you mouth is !

There you go here is another example of investing in the top companies, As suggested Okta, Crowd Strike, Zsczler and Cloud Flare have had an average return of 100% in the last year, way outperformed its index and any other unleveraged index.

Do you make all your investment decisions over such a short time frame?

Where are all the fund managers that beat the S&P500 over 10,15 or 20+ years? SPIVA report?

Soooooo.... where did you put all your money to avoid having any detractors? Apple?

I couldnt tell anyone what next years winners and detractors were going to be so I take the good with the bad and live happily with the results.

I dont think the the S&P500 exists to simply create an easy and safe benchmark for 'lazy and incompetent' fund managers either. Just my opinion.

Did you invest in these companies a year ago? What about in previous years?

You are completely correct that over the long term a very small number of companies contribute the majority of stock market returns above risk free treasury bills.

The challenge is consistently identifying them beforehand

Most stocks are duds (yes, you read that right) | The Evidence-Based Investor

This is called positive skewness and means you are much more likely to pick underperformers. Investing in the total market guarantees market returns less fees. No more, no less.

Interesting visualisation of who has generated the gross profits (USA) over the years.

    Fortune 500 3 Year Sum of Gross Profits from 1957 - 2019

Some of those studies that say only 1% of companies generate outperformance have bad methodology because they assume re-investment and a company like GM who eventually entered chapter 11 bankruptcy is treated like a 100% loss when in fact its economic impact from distributed earnings is huge.

Wow. I barely recognise names like "Fannie Mae" or "Freddie Mac" - crazy to seem them close to the top around 2015.

EDIT. Government sponsored Financials, that would probably explain it.
