We're looking to replace our existing Entrance/Front door.

Door frame is 1600mm (cannot go wider).

Currently we have a single timber 820mm door with a sidelight panel on either side (imagine early 90s timber with flower feature frosted glass and you'll get a good idea :D)

Looking for opinions here please, what adds more to a "street appeal" positive impact?

    1. Keeping the existing 820mm front door size with a 390mm sidelight on either side
    2. Increasing door width to, say 900mm front door size, with 2 small sidelights
    3. Changing to a double door structure (actually, unsure if 1600mm is wide enough for doubles).

    Thanks everyone

From experience do the double front door 820x2 if you can.

And if appropriate consider double-glazed with retractable sliding fly-screen.

Another alternative is a wide pivot door?

I should have mentioned the reason for double-glazed as a possibility is you presently have light coming in through the side panels. Go to solid and that light dispersion is no longer there. So depends on what you want overall - and can afford of course.

But have plenty of funds handy

I've been wanting to put in a massive pivot entry door at home for some time, as having a "GRAND ENTRY" would really top off the place :D

But by the time I end up with a marble base, fancy handles, digital locks, double glazing it's a $9k door

    Double if you can.

I have seen some imposing doors as a part time delivery offsider with B. Lee (no not Brett Lee but the retailer).

I kid you not, some double entrance doors must be 8 foot tall and solid timber. So much easier to deliver white goods.

Changed those single door with the frosted glass at the sides to a double 820 in the past. Delivery people love it. Great for furniture, fridge deliveries.

I would definitely go with a wider door or double as it it so much easier getting large items into the house.

You can get a wide hinged (not pivot) door which is 1020 wide that would still allow a side light panel if you wanted. But 2 x 820 that are cut down to 800 would also work well.

Those doors often have panels built in, so you get light even without a side light panel.

Many people elect for wide door with a single opening now. They hinge it inside approx 200m from the edge...Pivot door.

It allows a heavier door and avoids complex and costly morticed locks and latches on each side of double doors etc.

Wider doors pose issue for things like insect screens, security doors etc

I'd agree as well, a wide door, uneven leaves, or doubles are great when moving furniture etc.

If security is a concern the a wide single door is a better option. Concealed flush bolts in the secondary door will rely on the sturdiness of the transom and door material.

Hard to keep these sealed against the Melbourne cold weather though...

I'm a big fan of the wide pivot door purely from a visual point of view, especially if you have more than the 2040 standard height, two doors will look narrow.

From a budget point of view...not so good.
