Just wanting to get thoughts on the likelihood of being able to convert an attached carport of a townhouse into an additional bedroom? It is under the existing roofline. Thanks

How many carports/spaces do you currently have?

Is the structure capable of taking the additional windloading by being enclosed?

I don't own it, just looking at present. I believe there is one extra spot but I'm going to see it shortly. The extra room would be more useful to me than the car spot.

Will need to look into this, didn't realise it was an issue. I was more thinking from the body corporate side of things.

If it's a townhouse with a body corp, they are not going to be keen at all.

    Highly unlikely. Keep looking.

I live in a self managed block of four. I have permission from the BC to build in the carport. My unit however has 2 carspaces. Everyone else has one. If I didn't have the extra carspace I doubt I would have received permission.

Council permission will be another bridge to cross when the time comes...

Not easy, but it can be done!

A change like this requires council building approval. I would have doubts any council will permit a unstable external structure to be suitable as a bedroom. A application to seek an building extension that includes the carport removal would consider slab / footings and a number of other factors.

If my neighbour started to do this I would call council. I dont want a dodgy shanty in my street.

Thanks for the replies. I've lost interest in it for other reasons but good to know anyway!
