I am in Sydney and have an idea to covert my pergola / open deck area into a studio by adding "four walls" with a bathroom and kitchenette. Had anyone done this before? Do I have to go through council approval? Do I allow to lease out this self-contain studio? Cheers

A pergola is open to the sky. A verandah has a roof. If a bathroom and small kitchen are being added then you may need a building permit - I do not know the Sydney rules. On this point and renting I suggest seeking advice from your local council.
