Public housing issue came up on Current Affair last night. Adelaide/SA has the highest shortage relative to population size. This in the face of NRAS, relatively lower rents compared to other states and other affordable housing schemes.

I think, Adelaide is dealing with a massive drain where a lot of the young leave for other states leaving behind ever increasing number of dole bludgers.

Sounds like some great deals in the Elizabeth area! Will be trawling through the posts to learn more but sounds like great potential for deals.

    Public Housing

That's the link for the ACA program. However, they barely mentioned SA except for saying that the State Government was building more apartments in the inner city and also more at Elizabeth. The amount of households on the waiting list in SA is 21,600, which is higher than both WA and QLD despite SA having a much smaller population.

Can't blame them for leaving to find work that they have studied for when there is nothing available here.

Doesn't suprise me SA has the highest. This is despite SA paying the highest stamp duty.

The government should be encouraging developers to build more houses for people by cutting down all the taxes/costs in building/ subdivision and NRAS type schemes. There doesn't seem to be many NRAS property's in SA?

On the other hand the news story only showed the nicer old people that actually deserve a cheaper house. There are plenty of people you wouldn't want renting your house

I feel so grateful and blessed to be able to go to good schools and universities and have a job that allows me to buy my own house and invest in property.

However, I feel really annoyed with the sense of entitlement that these people have. Apart from a few that truly deserves public housing, most people got to that position by choices that they made in their life. Why complain and think that the government and taxpayer owes them a house that can potentially be sold to make revenue for more public housing?

I think that Queenslands "three strike and you're out" policy is totally reasonable, why provide housing to people that damages your property and doesn't appreciate what the taxpayers have provided them with.

If the government's witch hunt on property investment continues (removal of negative gearing etc), they should be prepared to see the waiting list go up many times compared to now.

Don't think so. I don't think affordable housing is the issue. SA is generally more affordable than anywhere else. Government needs to step up their game to get dole bludgers on to some form of employment. How is the work for dole program in SA?

The work for the dole program exists. Not sure how effective it is. I know Abott was making it harder for people to bludge with new rules saying unemployed people had to apply for 50 jobs per week or something (10 per day). Also they are making people goto TAFE or educate themselves in order to continue receiving payments.
