There are fresh ones in Sydney, apparently grown in Darwin.

    I love them

Get an Indian to cook Bombay Duck for you, it smells sort of like soiled nappies being cooked :p

God it tastes good though my mum fries it up now and then, goes great with beer :)

I didn't end up buying - what am I going to do with a couple of kg of durian on ice?

I have only tried durian in sweets - interesting flavour.

    OMG!

Actually no, but similar. That has english words on it - "Durian Cake". The rules were absolutely zero English. We weren't allowed to know what we were eating.

This puts durian smell to shame. It has a very pungent smell, very similar to raw sewerage. Its called 'stinky tofu'. But tastes greaaaat :D

This thread reminds me of a time about ten years ago when a friend and I went to a herbal shop and bought herbs to help with weight loss. The bag of stuff (different contents for each of us, after we had a consultation there) looked like leaves and debris you'd scrape out of the gutter after a good bit of rain. It looked quite harmless, like garden debris.

We had to boil it up in water for an hour or two, drain off the liquid and drink it. Boil it again the following day and drink it again. We did this for ten days (with fresh herbs every second day).

My kids came home and complained about the horrible smell. It WAS horrible. I had a LOT of trouble drinking it with the gag reflex kicking in as soon as I started. I tried holding my nose, letting it cool a bit in case that helped. It took me at least half an hour to get that drink down.

It was truly disgusting but I stuck with it for ten days. Didn't lose any weight.

After the first night, I boiled it up outside on the barbecue so the house didn't stink so much.

For those who tried these stinky foods that smell so bad, how can you enjoy eating them when smell is so closely tied into eating?

Building upon this, I recently learnt that there are people who actually boil a particular type of hornet called the Bamboo Hornet and drink it as tea. Of course, you do not drink the insect itself but just the water. It supposedly works great for sore throats and loss of voice according to what I have heard/read.

Several nationalities eat 'bacala' at easter (many europeans incl Bosnians, Italians, Chinese). This is a dried stock fish/cod. Stinks quite nicely - don't drive to Carlton/Leichhardt etc on Good Friday.

My Sicilian brother-in-law apparently loves a dried fish dish. He is now allowed to cook it indoors because his wife says it stinks. I guess this might be a similar dish you are talking about.

I was being gracious when I mentioned Italians. I was going to put Sicilians as a separate nationality but who am I to light fires? ;)

Oh wow, I haven't seen this for a long while lol

I grew up with Chinese meds. When I have sore throat, Mum used to boil herbs (got no idea what they are) and get me to drink the them. Sore throat gone the next day. None of the western medicine do that for me. Smell funky, taste slightly slimy but they works

Note, ginseng boil apparently can increase libido if anyone ever need it

Yes, I tried it. Taste good but doesn't work as well as my mums herbal drink :( I told hubby that I am thinking of getting herbs from Chinese store and he said nope, it's not really regulated and you've got no idea what's in it o_O
