The problem that is emerging is that it seems a lot of folks are fed-up with both Labor and Liberal (I am one of them), so are looking to vote for an Independent. (I will still vote LIberal even though).

The ramification of this ground swell for the Independents is that it will make a Liberal win (assuming they win) so weak and without majority, that they will be left in the same position as TA - controlled by a hostile Senate who will block a large number of proposals, and we will end up back where we were at the end of TA's term as PM......

We will be stuck with a seemingly ineffectual PM who is losing support, and may end up with a new Leader in a couple of years....

Can we try for 10 PM's in 10 years, guys??:rolleyes:

My understanding is that the way that votes are counted if you only put a "1" in a box has changed. Previously preferences were distributed according to the preferences of the party you voted for, should preferences need to be distributed. Now, if you only put a "1" in the box and preferences are distributed, you vote doesn't go anywhere else- the term used is that your vote will be "exhausted" (that is, if you vote for somebody who gets fewer votes and therefore more likely to have preferences distributed). That was a part of the senate "voting reforms" passed recently.

Bill did 1.5 terms in the senate...

3 years on a casual vacancy. A casual vacancy is where a senator quits/dies/etc mid term and is replaced by the state parliament of the state they sit in. Customarily on the advice of the party the retiring senator represents, and more recently has to be of the same party.

Bill then did another standard 6 year senate term, democratically elected. He was then voted out.

Enough waffle. Yes, bill got an indexed pension for life of around what you say. But he got it under the old system. We've mostly been discussing the system from 04.

You're welcome. After all I was Australia's first PM and had a lot to do with writing the constitution.

At least in the lower house, you can always vote 1 for an independent you know has no chance of getting in and then preference libs 2. That way your desire for libs to win over labs is respected but you get the opportunity to flip the bird to the major parties.

I just don't understand why Turnbull went for a DD. As you say if libs win then they will be right back where they started, maybe worse. Perhaps they're betting on Xenophon getting enough senate seats and being able to negotiate with him?

It's ironic that Turnbull claims only he can provide stable govt. He could be booted out as leader as you say and will have trouble in the senate.

In the ALP now it's almost impossible to depose an elected PM. They can negotiate with the greens more easily. A shorten ALP govt would be far more stable.

Perhaps we should just have a roster where the PM changes every 90 days?
