The body is feeling much better - and sleeping has improved - but - but - not having a glass of red on a chilly winter night is killing me!

I'm doing it too. I had a big Saturday last week, took days to recover, so I'm going dry for the rest of July.

    All the best with it!

I was having problems a few years back, I couldn't stop at just a couple of glasses, so I've been dry for about five years now.

Canberra has had its driest June on record.

And I've had my equal driest June on record.

I think I'm with you on that one. Would like to drink less - maybe less stress would help?.......

Or maybe just less enjoyment of wine? I love a glass of red at the moment, Id struggle to give it up without a good reason.

    Dry July made me miserable.

I now go for 3 days a week with no grog - but that is an average over the month.

That counts as dry July. It's all relative really.

I don´t know, once it has got a hold of you its a very difficult drug to quit. It´s hurt & killed a number of people in my family including my father 20 years ago, so I want to stop. For many simply drinking less is not an option, they can´t stop once started.

There is this stuff called Naltrexone that suppresses opiods in the brain and blocks the effects of alcohol & the urge to drink. Works for some, & with other narcotics also.

After test driving Dry July and whatnot over many years, I decided to stop playing with addiction and gave up drinking nearly two years ago. Best thing I ever did - clear head (took a few months), no hangovers, big savings, no having to worry what I said/did, better relationships, you name it - and I don't crave it at all. I think that the more you need a drink, the more you really don't.

The best resource I have ever come across on this is Allen Carr's book 'Easy way to control alcohol'. It turned me off the stuff for good.

Oh - I feel so much better, and less grumpy, and waking refreshed - but after putting together 20-something Ikea kitchen drawers I could murder an apple cider ... ... cuppa chamomile tea instead

    Wise words!

It's too late for me to do the Dry July but I'm starting it now and want to make drinking an irregular occurrence. I know I drink too much and a lot of that is due to stress and feeling financially insecure while trying to achieve financial freedom. Obviously spending money on alcohol is counter-intuitive towards the goal, let alone the obvious detrimental health and relation impacts alcohol dependence can cause. My problem is I binge drink so the whole alcohol is fine in moderation approach doesn't work for me. Another motivation for me is the psychological side.

I strongly recommend reading the book I mentioned before. It systematically dismantles the beliefs most people have that alcohol provides enjoyment, improves confidence, gives courage, reduces stress, solves life's problems and even tastes good. It's not just a case that the cons of drinking outweighing the pros - there are no valid pros to speak of at all. Once you come to that realisation, quitting drinking becomes quite effortless.
