My son tells me he wants a drift car. We tried to talk him out of it but he has the savings, is over 18. After a few days we thought he would get over it, but no. He tells me once I experience sliding sideways I will understand his passion. Help!!

Do what I did and buy a miniature drift car:

    They are awesome.

I would like a real life one but realistically...where the hell would you drift it? Maybe ask your son that; where does he plan to drift it.

I personally can't see the joy of it. But then I am not into drags either.... Much rather go ("normal"???) track or dirt.

I am not a car person at all. I drive a tiny beat up hatchback. But there's something about drifting that memorizes me.

Wasn't really a thing in my day but there are worse things he could be doing or spending his money on so I wouldn't worry.

You already have one son that has turned to the Dark Side (motorsport)?

Drift cars need high power engines, high cost . The good thing is most true drift cars won't be road worthy, locked rear diff.

Yes I'm glad he's not doing what a lot of things teens do. Still can't really get my head around drifting though, I just got my head around him racing, almost

It's the best thing ever. But yeah @Shogun isn't wrong there, it's an expensive hobby. Maybe he can ask his parents for a loan if upkeep gets a little too much. I bet they are pushovers :)

We tried that argument, He put $5000 in a don't touch account, which my hubby made him set up, then he has $10,000 in savings, he does work 12 hour shifts, etc. All his decision to work overtime when he wants to save

If I wanted to race I would look at a lower class of rally.

Drift cars. I can't see tyre bill being cheap. Running engines at max power/rpm. Things tend to go bang. I have seen a few unfinished drift cars for sale, none were cheap.
Also really only place to practice is the track.

I used to do it when I was younger just for fun. These days, I go to track events once or twice a year.

It's an expensive hobby, depending on how far he wants to go with it. I'm guessing a little older than 18? He'd till be limited by the power/weight of some cars (at least that's how QLD works).

If that's the case, he can still get a little non-turbo, tidy car. Power isn't a big issue as long as it's light. Keep it clean and legal and invest the money into suspension, proper LSD and tyres + entrance fees.

If he's a bit more serious, purchase a dedicated track car. Think $15,000-$20,000 for a semi-decent car (Nissan silvia would be my choice or an old 350z-cheap!). He'll need a decent tow vehicle and trailer though. This would be my last option though, at this point you'd have to be very serious about the sport.

But before you go through all that, google a local skidpan in the area. Get out there for a day to learn the basics and go from there. Get a bit of experience in a safe environment before spending big on a car that will go through serious punishment.
