    Hi there

I am looking to repair a dormer window, with one of the side weather boards coming loose.

Have been quoted thousands to repair due to the need for scaffolding to reach the second floor. I would’ve though it’s only a minor job, if only I could get up there. Am thinking of using a harness and just getting up their myself.

    Any suggestions?

I don't think that roof would have anything to attach a harness to?
You might have more luck hiring a cherry picker

It’s a pretty steep roof. And unfortunately the verandah blocks scaffold access from below the window.

Do you know how to set up a harness correctly for roof access?

if it was me, I would get a few more quotes.

Tie a rope around your waist and attach to chimney. Pull off old boards and replace with new. Don't fall off.

You still need somewhere for an attachment point to be mounted somewhere to attach the harness to.
Another option would be to hire a trailer mounted Elevated work platform from somewhere like Kennards.
Just dont get to close to the mains power supply that is also close bye.
Or gain entry into the Roof Void and remove a section of the roof to get access to the area

    • For starters tiger tails on the power lines
    • You may get away with a handrail system or temporary fall protection system.
    • Once you have a safe workplace, it'll be an easy job.

the only safety problem would be the power supply and the angle, and as this is a 5 minute job once everything safe ..just put 2 75mm roof screws staight into the widow frame tie yourself into that frame and just glue and screw in back into level..imho..

Eye hook into the window frame to harness off to and then back out some roof sheet screws an inch or so to provide a footing to stand on should see you right as long as you are confident to do it....or get another quote, many roofers wouldn't even bother harnessing up for a job that small

How many kilos of flailing, falling human will an eye hook hold, I wonder...?

If you have no idea then of course dont do it. If you do a proper 12mm s/s eyebolt will have a yield strength of over 1500kgs
