Yep. We’ve had the same car since 2006. 2 adults, share 1 car. We’ve just registered it for another year, put 4 new tyres on it.

We negotiate if we never need to use it at the same time, but that’s actually become rare, it hardly ever happens. We live walking/cycling distance to the trains, even before we moved we rode push bikes to the station.

But the upside is there's a LOT more members, greater diversity and they're more affluent

You're right.... and I don't think anyone can logically argue with that!

I have spent a substantial amount on cars over the years and I'd shudder to add up what it has cost me. But I don't regret that at all, it is discretionary spend that provides me joy :)

Worse than boats is aeroplanes. The fuel bill and operating costs is horrendous, pilots aren't cheap.
General rule of thumb is not to buy anything that floats, flies or fornicates. Renting is better than buying for these items.

There's only a small handful of members on PC whose opinions I listen to. More than enough for me.

Sorry have to disagree on both accounts.
It all comes down to your lifestyle and how much you use them. I have just returned from Karumba where I towed my boat up and fished nearly everyday for 2 months. Came home with plenty of fish (filleted) and can't wait to return next year around the same time.
Have a good mate who owns a Chieftain (10 seater aircraft) who flies regularly. Paid in the vicinity of 300k for it. He owns a concrete pumping business on the Central coast. Maintenance costs and fuel are part of the deal. If he couldn't afford it he wouldn't have bought it!
Where I am, not having a boat would restrict my lifestyle dramatically. Modern outboard motors today are very fuel efficient. Lifestyle, lifestyle!

I will take it off your hands for a princely sum....next year.
Always buy your boats in winter. :D
Two of my friends bought a boat together.
Used it 6 times in 3 years, blew up an engine and had to be towed in, bought boat for $80k, sold for $67k. Plus mooring fees approx $5k per year...that is expensive fun.
But, what price for fun, hey?

Currently got two paddock ornaments that cost me $90/ well in feed (due to the drought).

Fat buggers too, so we'll be right when the zombie apocalypse arrives

Its great for dogs to get out of the house and socialize and sometimes people are taking them for a walk and want a coffee. If the dogs get left at home all the time they get bored and a bored dog can start barking which neighbors hate. I think dog friendly cafes are great and for those who don't like them, there are plenty more that aren't dog friendly to go to. I would suggest that young kids climbing all over tables leave a lot more germs then a dog sitting on the concrete outside.

    Looks like an amazing trip.
Biggest fish I've ever caught was a 40cm flathead.
But my image of boat life is to go out about a kilometre, drop anchor, sit round and eat seafood and drink alcohol with a group of friends.
    Fishing rods optional. :D

He could come up here (Darwin)a get pretty close to that whenever he wants?

There's also a whole bunch of "bucket list" fishing tours he could go on all over the world? (PNG, Florida tarpon etc..)

None of these require your own boat!!!

Im a dog lover. Have had a dog(s) my whole life. I just dont like dogs being where people eat.
I take my dog for walks in the parks or bush or beach where they can run flat out. They dont need to socialise with people over their meals.

There is a time and a place for dogs and its not while people eat. I teach my dogs to scatter far away when we are eating. Just like dogs do in the natural and domesticated world. You ever see a dog with a bone sharing? My point!
