The main thing I see is people trying to portray the success bit without undertaking any/much of the below the water bit.

This is why I avoid social media and why forums and other internet only engagements can be an issue - its easy to portray a veneer of success when nobody has eyes on the reality. Anybody can claim they are anything when reality is very very different.

Many ways to be successful, and being a successful investor is just one facet. True of anything really. Successful career, healthy body.... If you don't put the effort in, you won't see the results.

I have shared that photo a few times in FB
    True for me.

It's not about talent, it's about hard work and continual failures along the way.

One of my IP residents drives a Porsche Cayman. I drive a 15+ year old single cab ute.

In the street, most would view the Porsche driver as successful. I know otherwise. First hand. In my 20s I drove a 911 and I was skinned practically the entire time I owned that car.

Theres a book called The Millionaire Next Door that touches on exactly this. There are those who want to look rich, vs those who are and are content with a comfortable level of living without the flash.

Also explains this recent piece Wealthiest suburbs among most vulnerable to mortgage stress - ABC News (Australian Broadcasting Corporation)

The illusion depicted is faced every day. When you look at someone, at just their external appearance, you are viewing and judging a mere 10% of them. Inside them is the real person that is so much more complex than what you can see.

As @DaveM says, many people display a portion of their life online and it is a carefully controlled drip of information to maintain that veneer but it is not real. This can be innocently by people who care to share their happy moments or a manipulation of the truth.

I have butted heads with a number of people on this forum but I don't think what we have disagreed on would prevent me from having a drink with them one day and getting to know them as there are so many other facets of them which I haven't seen and I may actually like.

True. Anyone close to me knows how hard I work. I am 8 months into a 6 month renovation and everyone close to me knows all about it.

Project management of course. That's why my own project is over time and over budget.

Lol I think it is more around the idea that hard work conducted to build a solid portfolio isn't always visible to others.

And also, as others have mentioned, those with genuine wealth tend not to show it visually by having the latest toys/cars/bling etc. Often those who waste their pennies on things like this, don't tend to have real wealth behind it.

As for the carrot, its more an aim of where I hope to get. My 'carrot' isnt that big yet, but hopefully the good foundations (um... fertaliser? If I keep the metaphor going?) are good to ensure that it'll grow wealth in the proportions to the rabbit on the left compared to the one on the right!
