Does the inability to search exact address on REA bug you?

I'm referring to the way that you are forced to enter exact suburb names most of the time. If you were to input an address that goes down to the street name, chances are that you are not going to get results that satisfy your search requirements. Does this bother anyone searching for properties at all?

For example, addresses like 341 George St, Sydney or 31A Penshurst Avenue returned invalid results.

Not really, if someone mentioned an address to me I'd just Google the address and chances are one of the RE portals would be the first match on it.

Edit - it would be kinda cool if the portals had street level searching though. Eg For Sale/Rent in Penshurst Avenue.

Isn't that what google is for? Then I select the relevant property on realestate.Com.Au on the results

It would be an improvement to search full street address, but like the others above me I just use google.

My pet hate with realestate.com.au is not being able to search by keyword/description.

So it would be roughly safe to assume that people generally dont start their search from REA but from Google? Is that a common practice?

Only when we're searching for a specific address like you mentioned. Otherwise I'd say most people jump on REA (or in some cases Domain) and search by suburb.

I wish I could search whole metro with criteria easier, but I think this would also involve agents entering more details in their listing. I think Zillow has more?

This is all very interesting to me, as I always felt that people would be bugged by the fact that REA returns inaccurate results when you search addresses on their website. However, I failed to recognise the fact that you can also search REA by searching on Google, which actually returns more accurate results than REA themselves.

oldlistings does what you want with historic listings: search a suburb then select the street. So it should be able to be done for current listings. I would use this feature.

I'm actually working on a real estate search engine and the ability to search for the street is present on my website. I was just really curious as to understand the searching patterns of individuals.

I use the Google image search. I look for houses with Mercs or BMWs in the driveway (agents' cars). Comes up with some spectacular results.

Only thing that annoys me is the lack of ability put in custom numbers for min and max, instead of just 50k increments as currently happens.

My pet hate is all the SQUANCH that comes up with every search. I choose a max of $250K, the first twenty houses are priced higher than that. Then the next twenty are "Price on application" or Auctions, and then there's house and land packages... far out. At least Domain knows what I want.

The real issue is the monopoly REA has over the industry.

Not quite what I mean, see REA through its size has forced the industry into using their version of xml(reaxml) which is old and limited and causes headaches.
