Time for Tuesday arvo day dreaming.

Draw out your own stations for a Melbourne Circle Line (well... at least half circle?), bit like Yamanoteh line if any knows.

    Here's mine:
    - Point Cook
    - Sunshine
    - Highpoint
    - Northland
    - Doncaster Westfield
    - Box Hill Central
    - Chadstone
    - Clayton
    - Franston

Melbourne once did have an outer circle line - the only remaining portion of it still in operation is the Alamein Line beyond Camberwell. The corridor is currently a bike trail for a good chunk of its length.

You should call it the Shopping Centre Line. Stations 3,4,5,6,7 are all Shopping Centres - opps may as well include 9.

If you are thinking Tokyo/Singapore/Hong Kong et. al. lines it won't work here.

The Melbourne PT line is designed (Note no new lines have been added since the Glenny line) to be sprawled not interlinked. Added to this, car was king, the tram/bus system was used as an intermediary and this won't work in Australia!

Cheaper options may exist in future and possibly for the Airport Link as well - driverless monorails. They take up much less space, can be moved much easier but I don't really know how it will work.

Do you need to go to all these places frequently?

I would say the city circle is the Melbourne equivalent of the Yamanote. An outer ring would be hideously expensive, and the places it would go aren't densely populated enough.

I've often mused on the idea of all the suburban lines stopping at the first stations out of the city (North Melbourne, Richmond etc), and then having trains dedicated to running through the loop to those 'feeder' stations every few minutes. I think you could run so many more services if you've got trains stopping in the inner suburbs, and heading straight back out, instead of running every single train though the loop.

Rail planners believe that EVERYBODY wants to go to the city so they have to build that capacity.
