I wonderif anyone knows anyone who knows anything about Hughenden Qld?

My hubby and I are two property junkies (in our minds). But with three IPs in Carlton North, Reservoir, and Frankston North (through SMSF) we decided to stop in there and we do not want to take any more loans. For our retirement those would be enough.

But on another forum, not related to property, someone posted, how they decided that rather than paying off a huge loans for Sydney shoe boxes, they found another solution. They bought a land in Tasmania for cash for $15K. Now they are going to slowly build there and move in closer to retirement.

Well we have our house already, but my addiction has kicked in. I had a look for the land in remote areas. Tasmania somehow does not appeal to me becase of the cold climat.

But I have found a block in Hughenden Qld. For under $5k. 1000sqmt, with utility connections available. I am thinking of grabbing it, just because. Because why not. Then probably set up a holiday house. Renting out through airbnb and moving in ourselves during winter time. Or just keep land it is.

I have had a look for the info available and statistics are not good. The population is declining.
I am thinking could it be that this town will just disappear and will become a ghost town?

Can you please just share your ideas and thoughts, pros and cons. Any info about this town itself will be greatly appreciated. If I decide to buy then I will visit the place myself. But I am still in doubts.

Seems cheap if its a town block (in comparison to capital cities) but I imagine the annual expenses and the build costs would take the bargain feel out of it, and airbnb sounds optimistic. Plus getting there, you could be in Fiji quicker from Melb

Why buy land and build when you can buy established houses on land in Hughenden from $40K? You cannot build for that!

If you want a house just roll up with 25k cash and see how you go. Someone might bite

Lots of cheap real estate in oz
Id take a look around before jumping in to anything
You would still need to pay rates as well

I used to have a cheap block. Drove me nuts. The rates and maintenance costs (grass cutting etc) made it a money pit. Illiquid with no incoming cashflow. Was glad to get rid of it.

If you're going to do it, get something like a shop or house....something that generates income.

Have you been to Hughendon? It's kind of creepy. We stopped there on our trip around Aus with the kids - saw the dinosaur museum and moved on ASAP.

My predominant memory of it there was dryness. And bones. And death. ;)
Just kidding, it wasn't that bad but I can't imagine retiring there. Tasmania has a million times more appeal despite the weather. Hughendon is miles from everywhere.

My dad lived there for a year driving trains and we spent school holidays there one summer. There is NOTHING there. Dinosaur museum, town pool and that's it. It's a tiny railway town in the middle of the desert with nothing of note within a few hours drive. If the only thing you like to do is drink heaps indoors with aircon blasting it's not a bad place, otherwise it is hell. Put it this way - my dad did another regional stint after that one and the choice was it or Mt Isa and we prayed he got Mt Isa. That says something.....

That made me laugh for real. We went to Mount Isa also - this was my impression at the time.

A lot of the outback towns do- tends to be the people, more than the place.

$5000 for a block! Hughendon is a candidate for $1 housing. And even then there are nicer places where they'll give you a house for $1.
